After War Gundam X

After War Gundam X (機動新世紀ガンダムX, Kidō Shinseiki Gandamu Ekkusu) is a 1996 Japanese mecha anime series produced by Sunrise and directed by Shinji Takamatsu. It is set in the After War (AW) timeline, 15 years after the 7th Space War ended in massive colony drops that killed most of humanity and left Earth in ruins. The story follows Garrod Ran, a young Vulture who pilots the GX-9900 Gundam X, and the crew of the Freeden as they protect Newtypes and try to prevent another war between the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army.

Overview

After War Gundam X was the third alternate-universe Gundam TV series of the 1990s, after Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. It is notable for its post-apocalyptic setting, use of Newtypes outside the Universal Century, and the Gundam X’s Satellite Cannon, which draws power from a lunar relay. Armed salvage groups called Vultures roam the wasteland in search of mobile suits and technology; the Freeden is one such ship, led by former Federal Forces pilot Jamil Neate. Garrod joins the crew after rescuing Tiffa Adill, a Newtype girl sought by both major powers.

Plot

Garrod Ran stumbles upon the Gundam X and uses it to save Tiffa from pursuers, then joins the Freeden. The crew—including Witz Sou, Roabea Loy, and others—travel the devastated Earth and space, protecting Tiffa and other Newtypes from exploitation while clashing with the New UNE and the SRA. The Frost brothers, Ennil El, and other antagonists drive the conflict; the series builds toward a resolution that avoids repeating the horrors of the 7th Space War. The anime was cut short at 39 episodes (from a planned 49) due to low ratings but remains well-regarded by fans for its second half and themes.

Reception and legacy

The series faced time-slot changes and cancellation but has gained appreciation over time. It was the first Gundam TV series to use cold opens and dialogue-based episode titles. Manga sequels include Under the Moonlight and Newtype Warrior Jamil Neate. The After War timeline has limited but dedicated coverage in games such as the Super Robot Wars and G Generation series.
