Mobile Fighter G Gundam
1994 anime in the Future Century; Gundam Fight tournament and Domon Kasshu's quest.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (機動武闘伝Gガンダム, Kidō Butōden Jī Gandamu) is a 1994 Japanese mecha anime series produced by Sunrise and directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa. It is set in the Future Century (FC) timeline, where political leadership is decided by the Gundam Fight—a tournament in which colony nations compete with mobile fighters. The story follows Domon Kasshu, Neo Japan’s representative, who pilots the Shining Gundam and later the God Gundam whilst searching for his brother and the stolen Devil Gundam.
Overview
In FC 60, Domon enters the 13th Gundam Fight under the guidance of Master Asia and is supported by Rain Mikamura. Mobile fighters use the Mobile Trace System, which maps the pilot’s movements to the machine, enabling martial-arts combat. The series blends national stereotypes, over-the-top action, and a darker plot involving the Devil Gundam and Domon’s family.
Plot
Domon must win the Gundam Fight to clear his father’s name and find his brother Kyoji, who is linked to the Devil Gundam. He battles representatives from Neo America, Neo China, Neo France, and others, and eventually confronts the Devil Gundam and his mentor Master Asia. The finale resolves the Devil Gundam threat and Domon’s personal arc.
Reception and legacy
G Gundam was the first Gundam series set entirely outside the Universal Century. It initially divided fans with its tone but has become a cult favourite. It was followed by Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
