Yuri Kellerne

Yuri Kellerne (ユーリ・ケルネ, Yūri Kerune) was a Principality of Zeon officer who held the rank of Rear Admiral and commanded Zeon forces in Europe during the One Year War. An old acquaintance of the Sahalin siblings, he was portrayed as gruff and ill-mannered but dedicated to the welfare of his men. After the Odessa base fell to the Earth Federation, Kellerne led his retreating troops east towards Ginias Sahalin’s development base in search of an escape route back to space.

Biography

Born in UC 0053 in Side 3, Kellerne served in the Zeon European Army. He knew Ginias and Aina Sahalin from earlier years and maintained contact with their affairs even as the war turned against Zeon on Earth.

After Odessa

When the Federation captured Odessa, Kellerne refused to abandon his soldiers. He organised the withdrawal of his division and marched them east, intending to link up with Ginias Sahalin’s secret base and use it as a route to evacuate to space. His determination to save his men typified the kind of officer who put their troops’ lives above pride or protocol.

Personality and traits

Kellerne came across as rough and blunt, but his actions showed a strong sense of duty. He was described as an honourable soldier who prioritised the well-being of his subordinates, making him a contrast to more ruthless or self-serving Zeon commanders.

Relationships

Sahalin family

Kellerne was an old acquaintance of Ginias Sahalin and Aina Sahalin. That connection motivated his decision to lead his forces towards Ginias’s base after Odessa fell, though Ginias’s own agenda and the Apsalus project would ultimately overshadow that plan.

Behind the scenes

Yuri Kellerne was created for Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team as a supporting Zeon officer who illustrated the human side of the Principality’s chain of command. He also appears in Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance, which expands on the European front of the One Year War.
