Ple Two

Ple Two (プルツー, Puru Tsū) was a Cyber Newtype clone of Elpeo Ple who served under Glemy Toto during the First Neo Zeon War. As the first of twelve clones created from Elpeo Ple’s genetic material, she was designed to be a perfect soldier and weapon for Neo Zeon’s military objectives.

Unlike her progenitor Elpeo Ple, who was kind, energetic, and friendly, Ple Two exhibited a cold and professional demeanour. However, through her experiences fighting against Judau Ashta and encountering the spirit of the deceased Elpeo Ple, she ultimately realised she wanted to be a person rather than merely a weapon, leading to her defection from Glemy’s forces during the climactic Battle of Axis.

Biography

Creation and early service

Ple Two was created by Glemy Toto as part of his secret clone project to develop the ultimate Newtype soldiers. She was the first of twelve clones of Elpeo Ple, designed to possess superior combat abilities whilst maintaining complete loyalty to Neo Zeon. Unlike natural Newtypes, Ple Two was a Cyber Newtype, artificially enhanced but potentially mentally unstable.

She was first introduced whilst in cold sleep aboard the Gwadan in UC 0088, when Glemy showed her to August Guidan as part of his project to create ultimate soldiers capable of defeating both Haman Karn and the AEUG. Glemy kept her existence secret from Haman and the rest of Neo Zeon’s leadership whilst he developed his clone army.

Awakening and first deployment

In late UC 0088, desperate for a victory against the Argama and its crew, Glemy awakened Ple Two from cold sleep and deployed her in the MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II. Her first combat mission was to destroy the AEUG ship and eliminate Judau Ashta’s team.

During this initial deployment, Ple Two proved to be a formidable opponent, pushing Judau’s MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam to its limits. However, sensing the evil presence of the Psycho Gundam Mk-II, Elpeo Ple sortied in her partially dismantled AMX-004-2 Qubeley Mk-II to intercept her clone. The two found they could anticipate each other’s attacks perfectly due to their shared genetic origin.

The confrontation ended tragically when Elpeo Ple sacrificed herself, ramming her Qubeley Mk-II into the Psycho Gundam Mk-II in a desperate attempt to save Judau and stop Ple Two’s assault. This act shocked Ple Two and marked the beginning of her gradual change of heart.

Service with the Glemy Faction

Following the original Ple’s death, Ple Two continued to serve Glemy faithfully, though she began experiencing troubling headaches and psychological pressure when fighting other Newtypes. The death of her progenitor had affected her more deeply than she initially realised, and the spirit of Elpeo Ple began to influence her through their Newtype connection.

When Glemy launched his rebellion against Haman Karn, Ple Two accompanied him as his right hand, piloting various mobile suits including a red AMX-004-3 Qubeley Mk-II. She participated in attacks on both Haman’s forces and the AEUG, displaying exceptional piloting skills and tactical awareness.

The Battle of Axis and redemption

During the climactic Battle of Axis on 17 January UC 0089, Ple Two piloted the massive NZ-000 Queen Mansa alongside Glemy in their final assault. However, when she faced Judau in combat, the combined influence of his Newtype abilities and the spirit of Elpeo Ple finally broke through her conditioning.

Convinced by Judau’s words and the memory of her progenitor’s love for him, Ple Two finally defected from Glemy’s forces. She began referring to Judau as “big brother,” just as Elpeo Ple had done. This betrayal contributed to Glemy’s downfall, as Roux Louka was able to kill him with the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam’s beam rifle whilst he was distracted.

Final sacrifice

Severely wounded during her escape from the exploding Queen Mansa, Ple Two used the last of her strength to locate and rescue Judau from the crumbling asteroid Moussa, which had been attached to Axis. With her final act, she demonstrated the same selfless love for Judau that her progenitor had shown, ensuring his survival before succumbing to her injuries.

In the novelisation of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Ple Two’s death was clearly depicted, and a funeral was held for her, acknowledging her ultimate redemption and sacrifice.

Personality and traits

Ple Two was initially characterised by her cold, professional demeanour and unwavering loyalty to Glemy Toto’s commands. Unlike the cheerful and energetic Elpeo Ple, she approached combat and interpersonal relationships with clinical detachment, viewing herself primarily as a weapon rather than a person.

However, beneath this cold exterior, she retained the capacity for empathy and care. She occasionally chose not to kill certain opponents she encountered, and showed surprise when called a “good person” by a civilian. Her conditioning as a perfect soldier was gradually eroded by her experiences with other Newtypes, particularly Judau Ashta.

The pressure of her enhanced abilities often caused her severe headaches, especially when fighting other Newtypes. This mental strain, combined with the influence of Elpeo Ple’s spirit, eventually allowed her true personality to emerge. By the end of her life, she had embraced the same love and care that her progenitor felt for Judau.

Skills and abilities

As a Cyber Newtype, Ple Two possessed artificial psychic abilities that allowed her to sense other Newtypes and control remote weapons systems. Her powers were considered superior to those of the original Elpeo Ple, making her an extremely formidable pilot.

She could control funnels and other psycommu-guided weapons with remarkable precision, even when not physically present in her mobile suit, using a special head-mounted device. Her piloting skills were exceptional, allowing her to master multiple types of mobile suits ranging from the massive Psycho Gundam Mk-II to the agile Qubeley Mk-II.

Relationships

Elpeo Ple

Though created from Elpeo Ple’s genetic material, Ple Two initially felt no connection to her progenitor. However, following Elpeo Ple’s death, the original’s Newtype spirit began to influence Ple Two, gradually awakening her capacity for love and compassion. This spiritual connection ultimately proved crucial in her redemption.

Judau Ashta

Ple Two’s relationship with Judau evolved from that of enemy to surrogate sibling. Initially viewing him as a target to be eliminated, repeated encounters with his powerful Newtype abilities and genuine compassion gradually changed her perspective. By the end of her life, she referred to him as “big brother,” mirroring her progenitor’s affection.

Glemy Toto

Glemy was Ple Two’s creator and commanding officer, whom she served with absolute loyalty for most of her existence. He treated her as a weapon and tool rather than a person, which ultimately contributed to her eventual rebellion against him. Despite her defection, she felt no personal animosity towards Glemy, viewing their conflict as a necessary step towards becoming human.

Marida Cruz

Though they never met directly, Marida Cruz (Ple Twelve) was Ple Two’s “youngest sister” among the clone siblings. Marida would later encounter references to Ple Two through her connection to the other clones, and in some video game appearances, characters nearly mistake one for the other.

Mobile suits

MRX-010 Psycho Gundam Mk-II

Ple Two’s first combat deployment was in this massive mobile armor, previously piloted by Rosamia Badam. The 40-metre-tall machine provided overwhelming firepower and served as her introduction to combat against Judau Ashta and the AEUG forces. Her control of this powerful unit demonstrated her exceptional abilities as a Cyber Newtype pilot.

AMX-004-3 Qubeley Mk-II

Later in the conflict, Ple Two piloted a red variant of the Qubeley Mk-II, distinguished from Elpeo Ple’s purple unit by its colour scheme. This mobile suit was perfectly suited to her enhanced Newtype abilities, allowing her to control its complement of funnels with deadly precision.

NZ-000 Queen Mansa

During the final phase of the war, Ple Two piloted this colossal mobile suit alongside Glemy in their assault on both Haman’s forces and the AEUG. The Queen Mansa’s massive firepower and funnel array made it one of the most formidable units of the era, though it ultimately became her tomb when she chose to defect.

Behind the scenes

Ple Two was voiced by Chieko Honda in the original Japanese version of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Honda also provided the voice for Elpeo Ple, emphasising the connection between the original and clone. The late voice actress’s performance effectively conveyed Ple Two’s initial coldness and gradual humanisation.

In English adaptations, she was voiced by Kate Rowan. The character’s name is sometimes romanised as “Puru Two” due to the Japanese pronunciation of “Ple.”

Ple Two was designed by the same creative team responsible for the other characters in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, though specific design credit information is not readily available. Her visual design deliberately mirrored that of Elpeo Ple while conveying a more mature and serious demeanour through subtle differences in expression and bearing.

The character represents one of the first major explorations of cloning themes in the Gundam franchise, raising questions about identity, humanity, and free will that would be revisited in later series.
