Ford Romfellow

Ford Romfellow was a young pilot in the Earth Federation Forces who served aboard the SCVA-72 Thoroughbred during the One Year War. Despite his youth and relative inexperience, he was selected to pilot the RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 “G05”, one of the eight prototype Gundam units produced during the early stages of the war.

Considered a pilot prodigy, Ford Romfellow distinguished himself through his exceptional skill with the Gundam’s signature giant Gatling gun and his ability to survive the war’s most dangerous covert operations. His service with the 16th Autonomous Mobile Squadron took him far from the main theatres of conflict, conducting interdiction missions and special operations behind enemy lines.

Biography

Early career and assignment

Ford Romfellow’s exceptional piloting abilities were recognised early in his career, leading to his assignment to the prestigious 16th Autonomous Mobile Squadron despite his young age and limited combat experience. The squadron operated independently from the main Earth Federation fleet, conducting covert operations and special missions throughout the war.

In November UC 0079, Ford was assigned to the SCVA-72 Thoroughbred, a Pegasus-class assault carrier specifically modified for covert operations. The ship was equipped with specialized systems including anti-laser chaff dispensers and rapid Minovsky particle deployment equipment, making it ideal for stealth missions behind enemy lines.

Ford was chosen to pilot the newly completed RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 “G05”, working alongside veteran pilot Luce Cassel who operated the RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4 “G04”. The Thoroughbred also carried three RX-77-2 Guncannons to provide additional mobile suit support for their missions.

Covert operations

The Thoroughbred’s primary mission involved serving as one of four decoy ships protecting the rear of the Earth Federation’s main fleet. However, their covert operations extended far beyond this basic role. Ford and his squadron were tasked with intercepting Zeon supply routes behind the Moon, disrupting reinforcements heading to Space Fortress Solomon in preparation for Operation Star One.

Throughout most of the war, Ford participated in numerous operations designed to cripple Zeon logistics and prevent the enemy from consolidating their defensive positions. These missions required exceptional skill and courage, as the small squadron operated deep in hostile territory with limited support.

Ford quickly demonstrated his natural affinity for the RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5, particularly excelling in the use of its signature weapon—a massive Gatling gun that provided devastating firepower against multiple targets. His proficiency with this unique armament made him an invaluable asset for the squadron’s operations.

Loss of Luce Cassel

The Thoroughbred’s most significant engagement occurred when they located a Granada fleet heading for Solomon and launched an ambush attack. Ford’s role in this mission was to protect Luce Cassel and his RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4 while Luce prepared to fire the unit’s experimental mega beam launcher.

The mission achieved its tactical objective when Luce successfully destroyed the enemy fleet with the powerful beam weapon. However, the victory came at a terrible cost—the mega beam launcher’s energy requirements overloaded the G04’s additional power pack, causing a catastrophic explosion that destroyed both the mobile suit and killed Luce Cassel.

This loss profoundly affected Ford, transforming him from a joyful young pilot into a more serious and determined warrior. The death of his partner and the destruction of one of the eight prototype Gundams served as a harsh reminder of the war’s costs, even for elite units equipped with the Federation’s most advanced technology.

Following Luce’s death, Ford was forced to operate alone, defending the Thoroughbred against the surviving Zeon forces from the ambushed fleet. His successful solo defense of the ship demonstrated remarkable skill and earned him the lasting enmity of ace pilot Mallet Sanguine, who blamed Ford for the destruction of his fleet.

Escort mission and final confrontations

Near the end of the war, Ford and the Thoroughbred received a crucial assignment: protecting Darcia Bakharov, the Prime Minister of the Principality of Zeon, during his journey to Granada for the peace negotiations that would end the One Year War. This mission was critical for ensuring the war’s conclusion and preventing further bloodshed.

The escort mission proved highly dangerous, as remnants of the Pezun garrison launched desperate attacks to prevent the peace accords. These forces, composed of advanced mobile suits including the MS-11 Act Zaku and MS-17 Galbaldy α, represented some of Zeon’s most advanced technology and experienced pilots.

During the climactic battle, Ford finally confronted his nemesis Mallet Sanguine, who piloted an MS-11 Act Zaku with all safety limiters removed. Despite facing a more advanced mobile suit operated by a renowned ace pilot, Ford’s superior skill and the RX-78-5’s capabilities allowed him to emerge victorious.

Ford’s defeat of Mallet Sanguine marked the end of both his personal vendetta and the organized resistance to the peace negotiations. The successful protection of Prime Minister Bakharov enabled the signing of the Granada Treaty and the formal conclusion of the One Year War.

Encounter with the third Braw Bro

During the escort mission, Ford encountered and destroyed the third MAN-03 Braw Bro mobile armour, demonstrating the RX-78-5’s effectiveness against even the most advanced Zeon weapons. This engagement showcased both Ford’s piloting abilities and the continued evolution of mobile suit technology throughout the war.

Personality and traits

Ford Romfellow began his service as an enthusiastic and joyful young pilot, excited by the opportunity to serve aboard an elite vessel with cutting-edge technology. His natural talent and prodigious abilities made him confident in his capabilities, though he retained the optimism typical of youth.

The death of Luce Cassel marked a turning point in Ford’s personality, transforming him into a more serious and focused warrior. This change reflected the maturing influence of combat experience and personal loss, common themes among pilots who survived the war’s most dangerous operations.

Despite the trauma of losing his partner, Ford maintained his dedication to duty and his skills continued to improve throughout the conflict. His ability to function effectively as a solo pilot after Luce’s death demonstrated both resilience and adaptability under extreme pressure.

Skills and abilities

Mobile suit piloting

Ford Romfellow possessed exceptional natural piloting abilities that justified his selection for the prototype Gundam programme despite his youth and inexperience. His quick adaptation to the RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 demonstrated both technical aptitude and combat instinct.

His particular expertise with the mobile suit’s giant Gatling gun set him apart from other pilots, as this weapon required precise timing and positioning to achieve maximum effectiveness. Ford’s mastery of this unique armament made him particularly effective against multiple targets and heavily armoured opponents.

Combat experience

Through his service with the Thoroughbred, Ford gained extensive experience in covert operations, solo combat, and fleet engagements. His ability to survive numerous dangerous missions while operating deep in enemy territory demonstrated both skill and tactical intelligence.

His victory over Mallet Sanguine, an experienced ace pilot in a superior mobile suit, represented the pinnacle of his combat development. This achievement proved that pilot skill could overcome technological disadvantages when combined with superior tactics and determination.

Survival instincts

Ford’s status as one of the few pilots among the eight early RX-78 units to survive the war without serious injury highlighted his exceptional survival instincts and combat awareness. This achievement was particularly remarkable given the dangerous nature of his assignments and the high casualty rates among prototype Gundam pilots.

RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 “G05”

Ford Romfellow’s entire combat career was defined by his partnership with the RX-78-5 Gundam Unit 5 “G05”, one of the most distinctive units in the prototype Gundam series. The mobile suit’s unique armament and capabilities perfectly complemented Ford’s piloting style and tactical preferences.

The G05’s signature giant Gatling gun became Ford’s weapon of choice, allowing him to engage multiple targets simultaneously while providing sustained fire support for squadron operations. His mastery of this weapon system made the G05 a formidable opponent in both fleet engagements and solo combat scenarios.

The mobile suit’s additional equipment, including collapsible shields and magnet coating treatment, enhanced Ford’s effectiveness in extended combat operations. These features, combined with Ford’s growing experience, allowed the G05 to remain competitive against increasingly advanced enemy mobile suits throughout the war.

Relationships

Luce Cassel

Luce Cassel served as Ford’s partner and mentor during their time aboard the Thoroughbred. As a veteran pilot operating the RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4, Luce provided guidance and support for the younger, less experienced Ford. Their partnership was cut short by Luce’s death during the mega beam launcher incident, profoundly affecting Ford’s development as both a pilot and a person.

Mallet Sanguine

Mallet Sanguine became Ford’s primary nemesis following the ambush that destroyed the Granada fleet and killed Luce Cassel. This rivalry drove much of Ford’s character development during the later stages of the war, culminating in their final confrontation during the escort mission to Granada.
