Earth Alliance

The Earth Alliance (地球連合, Chikyū Rengō) was a military and political coalition of Earth nations formed in Cosmic Era 70 to oppose the PLANTs and ZAFT during the First Alliance-PLANT War. Led primarily by the Atlantic Federation, the Earth Alliance represented the interests of Naturals—unmodified humans who remained on Earth—and sought to maintain Earth’s dominance over space and prevent Coordinator independence.

History

Formation

The Earth Alliance was formed in CE 70 in response to the PLANTs’ declaration of independence and the establishment of ZAFT as the Coordinators’ military force. The alliance brought together major Earth nations including the Atlantic Federation, Eurasian Federation, and Republic of East Asia, uniting them in opposition to what they perceived as a threat to Earth’s sovereignty.

The alliance’s formation was driven by fear and prejudice against Coordinators, who possessed superior physical and intellectual abilities compared to Naturals. The extremist Blue Cosmos organisation, which advocated for Coordinator genocide, gained significant influence within the Earth Alliance’s leadership, particularly in the Atlantic Federation.

First Alliance-PLANT War

The Earth Alliance initiated the First Alliance-PLANT War through aggressive actions against the PLANTs, including the use of nuclear weapons in violation of treaties. The alliance’s military forces, equipped with mobile suits developed as part of the G Project, engaged ZAFT forces throughout the war.

The Earth Alliance’s most advanced mobile suits, including the GAT-X series developed at Heliopolis, were designed to match ZAFT’s technological superiority. However, the alliance’s extremist Blue Cosmos leadership pursued policies that escalated the conflict, including the use of nuclear weapons and biological weapons against Coordinator populations.

Legacy

The Earth Alliance’s conduct during the First Alliance-PLANT War, particularly its association with Blue Cosmos and its use of weapons of mass destruction, created lasting animosity between Naturals and Coordinators. The alliance’s defeat and the exposure of Blue Cosmos’s genocidal agenda led to significant political changes on Earth.

Organisation

The Earth Alliance operated as a coalition of Earth nations, with the Atlantic Federation serving as the leading member and providing much of the alliance’s military leadership and resources. The alliance maintained a unified military command structure whilst allowing member nations to retain their own governments and some autonomy.

The alliance’s military headquarters was located at JOSH-A, a major military base on Earth. The alliance’s forces included both conventional military units and special operations forces, with mobile suit development and deployment being a key priority.

Military

The Earth Alliance military operated various classes of warships and mobile suits, with the GAT-X series representing the alliance’s most advanced mobile suit technology. The alliance’s forces were primarily composed of Natural soldiers, though some Coordinators who remained on Earth also served in alliance forces.

The alliance’s military strategy emphasised overwhelming force and technological superiority, developing advanced mobile suits like the Strike Gundam to counter ZAFT’s advantages. However, the alliance’s association with Blue Cosmos led to the pursuit of extreme policies that prioritised Coordinator extermination over tactical objectives.
