Atlantic Federation

The Atlantic Federation (大西洋連邦, Taiseiyō Renpō) was a superstate and the most powerful member of the Earth Alliance during the Cosmic Era. Formed from the United States of America and several northwestern European nations, it controlled territory spanning North America, the West Indies, Greenland, Iceland, Great Britain, and Ireland, as well as Pacific islands formerly under U.S. control.

Overview

The Atlantic Federation served as the de facto leader of the Earth Alliance, providing the largest share of military forces and driving key strategic decisions throughout both the First and Second Alliance-PLANT Wars. Its capital remained Washington D.C., with the Federation President continuing to operate from the White House.

The JOSH-A military base in Alaska functioned as the Earth Alliance’s primary military headquarters until its destruction during Operation Spitbreak, after which command was transferred to Heaven’s Base in Iceland. The Federation also established the Ptolemaeus lunar base in C.E. 35 and unveiled the first generation of mobile armours.

History

Formation and Early Era

Following the Reconstruction War, the Atlantic Federation emerged as one of Earth’s dominant superstates. It cooperated with the United States of South America to construct the Porta Panama mass driver and was the largest sponsor of the PLANT construction programme at Lagrange 5, reaping significant benefits from imported PLANT goods.

In C.E. 62, the Atlantic Federation engaged in territorial water disputes with the Orb Union.

First Alliance-PLANT War

After the destruction of United Nations leadership in C.E. 70, the Atlantic Federation announced the formation of the Earth Alliance on 7 February and declared war on the PLANTs four days later. When the United States of South America refused to cooperate, the Federation forcibly annexed their territory.

The Federation initiated the G Project — a secret programme to develop mobile suits to counter ZAFT’s superiority — producing the Strike, Duel, Buster, Blitz, and Aegis Gundams.

During the ZAFT attack on JOSH-A, the Atlantic Federation deliberately sacrificed its Eurasian Federation allies, granting it near-total control over the Earth Alliance. It subsequently attacked the Orb Union, which became a Federation protectorate after its defeat.

Post-War Period

Following the ceasefire at Jachin Due, the United States of South America rebelled against the Federation. While the Treaty of Junius eventually granted the USSA its autonomy, the Atlantic Federation retained control of Central America.

Second Alliance-PLANT War

After the “Break the World” Incident, the Atlantic Federation formed the World Security Treaty Organization, effectively making every member an ally. During the second war, it pressured most nations into Earth Alliance membership.

Following Gilbert Durandal’s anti-Logos speech, President Joseph Copeland — revealed to be a puppet of Lord Djibril — fled to the Arzachel lunar base. Copeland was killed when the base was destroyed by ZAFT’s Requiem superweapon.

Post-War Cooperation

After the fall of LOGOS and the death of Lord Djibril, Blue Cosmos’ hold on the Atlantic Federation weakened significantly. Under President Foster, the Federation became a co-sponsor of the peace monitoring organisation Compass alongside the Orb Union and PLANTs.

Military

The Atlantic Federation provided the largest contingent of the Earth Alliance military, including its most advanced mobile suit forces. Key military installations included:

  • JOSH-A — Alaska headquarters, destroyed during Operation Spitbreak
  • Heaven’s Base — Iceland facility, successor to JOSH-A
  • Ptolemaeus — Lunar base, established C.E. 35
