Doctor S

Doctor S (ドクトルS, Dokutoru S) was the engineer and creator of the XXXG-01H Gundam Heavyarms, specializing in ballistic weaponry and fire-control systems. Distinguished by his prosthetic nose and spiked grey hair, Doctor S was shown to be one of the more humane members of the five Gundam Scientists when he expressed concern for the casualties that would result from the original Operation Meteor. He died on 24 December AC 195 alongside the other scientists when they sacrificed themselves to prevent Libra from crashing into Earth.

Personality

Not much of Doctor S’s personality was revealed over the course of the series, although he demonstrated greater humanity than some fellow scientists. He expressed concern for civilian casualties from the original Operation Meteor, opposing the genocidal plan. He was also unwilling to allow Trowa Barton (No-Name) to die after witnessing the murder of the real Trowa Barton, claiming there was no good reason to kill him—showing pragmatic compassion beneath his reserved exterior.

Biography

Tallgeese project and departure

Doctor S was one of the five scientists working on the first mobile suit, the Tallgeese, but ceased its development when the Alliance tightened its hold over the colonies. The scientists separated to different colonies where they constructed the Gundams for revenge against OZ for the death of Heero Yuy.

Pilot crisis and No-Name (AC 195)

Doctor S was opposed to Operation Meteor and switched the plan to attacking OZ bases only. However, Heavyarms’ assigned pilot, the actual Trowa Barton, believed the colonies should conquer Earth rather than simply avenge Heero Yuy. Trowa was prepared to report S to his father Dekim Barton.

An engineer, willing to protect his family on Earth, killed Trowa before he could betray Doctor S. A nameless young engineer who had been working on Heavyarms offered to take the dead man’s name and Gundam and ignore Operation Meteor. Doctor S accepted, allowing No-Name to become “Trowa Barton” and pilot Heavyarms in the modified operation.

Capture and forced labour

Doctor S was reunited with his fellow scientists when OZ tracked them down. Lady Une ordered them to create mobile suits more powerful than the Gundams. The scientists complied by creating the Mercurius and Vayeate, whilst secretly reconstructing Deathscythe and Altron.

When Romefeller Foundation engineer Tubarov attempted to suffocate the pilots and scientists, Lady Une released them, and the scientists were rescued by soldiers of the Treize Faction.

Final sacrifice

The scientists were detained by White Fang, who had them finish work on the captured OZ battleship Libra and reconstruct the Mercurius and Vayeate. However, they designed a malfunction in Libra’s main cannon so it would need repair after each shot.

Doctor S and the other scientists were killed on Peacemillion in their attempt to stop Libra from crashing onto Earth, sacrificing themselves to atone for creating weapons of war.
