Artesia Som Deikun
Born Artesia Som Deikun, later known as Sayla Mass — sister of Char Aznable and daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun.
Artesia Som Deikun (アルテイシア・ソム・ダイクン, Aruteishia Somu Daikun) was the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun, founder of the Republic of Zeon, and younger sister of Casval Rem Deikun, who would later become known as Char Aznable. After fleeing Side 3 following her father’s death, she adopted the name Sayla Mass to avoid detection by the Zabi family.
Early life
Artesia was born on 12 September UC 0062 on Side 3, the daughter of Zeon Zum Deikun and his mistress Astraia Tor Deikun. Her early life was cut short when her father died suddenly in UC 0068, an event widely suspected to be an assassination orchestrated by the Zabi family.
Flight from Side 3
Fearing persecution by the Zabis, Artesia and her brother Casval were smuggled off Side 3 with the help of family friend Jimba Ral. They were placed under the care of Don Teabolo Mass, a wealthy aristocrat who adopted them. Casval took the name Édouard Mass, while Artesia became Sayla Mass.
Service on the White Base
As Sayla Mass, she served as a communications officer aboard the White Base during the One Year War, concealing her true identity from her crewmates. She also demonstrated skill as a mobile suit pilot when circumstances demanded.
