Astraia Tor Deikun

Astraia Tor Deikun (アストライア・トール・ダイクン) was the mistress of Zeon Zum Deikun and the mother of Casval Rem Deikun (Char Aznable) and Artesia Som Deikun (Sayla Mass) in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. She focused on raising their children rather than direct political involvement.

Biography

Astraia bore Deikun two children—Casval in UC 0059 and Artesia in UC 0062—while he remained legally married to Roselucia Deikun. This arrangement protected the children from the immediate dangers of political life whilst they grew up with knowledge of their father’s ideals. The illegitimate status of Casval and Artesia left them vulnerable after Deikun’s death, when the Zabi family consolidated power and Jimba Ral helped the siblings flee to Earth.

After the children’s escape, Astraia remained in captivity and later died; Sayla Mass learned of her mother’s death and grieved at a gravestone that Don Teabolo Mass had erected under a pseudonym for security.

Relationships

Zeon Zum Deikun

Zeon Zum Deikun was Astraia’s partner and the father of her children. The relationship reflected both Deikun’s personal desires and his need for an heir to continue his political line.

Casval and Artesia

Casval and Artesia were raised by Astraia; after their flight to Earth they took the names Édouard and Sayla Mass under the care of Don Teabolo Mass.

Behind the scenes

Astraia Tor Deikun was developed in the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga and OVA by Yasuhiko Yoshikazu, expanding the backstory of Char Aznable and Sayla Mass.
