AMS-119 Geara Doga

The AMS-119 Geara Doga was a mass production general purpose mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics for Neo Zeon during the Second Neo Zeon War.

The “A” in the model code denoted it was manufactured by Anaheim Electronics, the “MS” indicated it was a mobile suit, and the “119” was its development number in the Anaheim sequence. The name “Geara Doga” was derived from “Gear” and “Doga”, maintaining the Zeon tradition of naming mobile suits after Germanic terms.

History

The AMS-119 Geara Doga was developed based upon the design of an Axis machine taken out by members of Neo Zeon following the group’s defeat at the end of the First Neo Zeon War. When Char Aznable returned to lead his own Neo Zeon faction in UC 0093, the organisation needed a new mass production mobile suit to serve as the backbone of their forces.

Since the resources of Char’s Neo Zeon were limited, the Geara Doga was not a particularly high-performing unit when compared to the machines used by Haman Karn’s Neo Zeon four years earlier; however, it was well in line with the style of mobile suit design of the day. Production was entrusted to Anaheim Electronics’ Granada factory, which had ties with the former Zeon military. About 100 Geara Doga units were produced, including 82 standard units and 10 commander units.

The Geara Doga first saw combat during the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093, serving as the primary mobile suit of Char’s forces. A mass produced frontline mobile suit used by Neo Zeon during the Second Neo Zeon War (aka Char’s Rebellion), the AMS-119 Geara Doga could be considered a distant descendant of the old Principality of Zeon’s original mainstay unit, the MS-06F Zaku II. The mobile suit proved effective against Federation forces, with several units achieving notable combat records under skilled pilots such as Rezin Schnyder.

Although most of the Geara Dogas were destroyed during Second Neo Zeon War, use of surviving Geara Dogas continued amongst the various Neo Zeon remnant groups. The most well known of these groups is “The Sleeves”. By UC 0096, Full Frontal’s “Sleeves” faction of Neo Zeon used the AMS-129 Geara Zulu as their frontline mobile suit, but they continued to field Geara Dogas that had survived Char’s Rebellion. These units bore the distinctive sleeve decorations that gave the faction its nickname.

Design

Although not exactly a high performance model, the Geara Doga was sturdy, dependable, and inexpensive to mass-produce. The mobile suit incorporated design elements and technology descended from the venerable MS-06F Zaku II, maintaining the classic Zeon aesthetic whilst incorporating more modern systems.

The Geara Doga featured a panoramic monitor cockpit with a linear seat configuration, representing an advancement over older Zeon mobile suits. The Geara Doga was fitted with old Zeonic-style mono-eye head sensors able to detect targets at a longer range and thus make a faster offensive; however, when within combat range, the sensor’s performance became limited in terms of target-tracking. The sensor system had a detection range of 16,400 metres.

The mobile suit was powered by a Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor generating 2,160 kW of output. Its propulsion system consisted of rocket thrusters providing a total of 54,000 kg of thrust (two main thrusters of 14,000 kg each and two secondary thrusters of 13,000 kg each), plus fifteen vernier thrusters and apogee motors for fine manoeuvring control.

The basic specifications of this machine were for space combat, and a backpack for long-distance cruising was standard equipment. With its versatility, manoeuvrability, and maintainability, the Geara Doga combined all the necessary factors as a practical weapon whilst earning the trust of mechanics and pilots in the field.

Armaments

The Geara Doga had a wide variety of weapons to cope with different combat situations. Its only fixed armaments were a beam sword-axe for close combat and a shock anchor. Typically armed with one of two different beam machine guns – a larger type mounting an optional grenade launcher, and a slightly smaller type equipped with a removable heat bayonet – a shield carrying four rocket-propelled grenades and four sturm faust weapons, and a beam sword-axe, the Geara Doga was well enough equipped for a typical grunt soldier.

Beam sword-axe

The Geara Doga’s primary melee weapon was a beam sword-axe that could be hand-carried when in use. This weapon used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of an axe blade, allowing it to cut through most armour materials. When not in use, the weapon was stored in a recharge rack, though the exact storage location varied between units.

Electric wire

The mobile suit was equipped with an electric wire system, likely used for electronic warfare or disabling enemy systems at close range.

Shield

The Geara Doga could mount a shield on its left forearm for defensive purposes. The shield was equipped with four grenade launchers, providing additional firepower options during combat. The shield also served as a storage rack for the mobile suit’s sturm faust rockets.

Beam machine gun

The Geara Doga could be equipped with one of two beam machine gun variants. The standard version was powered by replaceable energy packs (E-pacs) and featured an attached heat bayonet for close-range combat. Two spare E-pacs were typically stored on the mobile suit’s hip armour. The larger variant could mount an optional grenade launcher beneath the barrel, providing additional anti-mobile suit capability.

Sturm faust

The mobile suit carried four sturm faust weapons - rocket-propelled warheads that could be hand-operated or launched directly from the shield. These unguided rockets were effective against enemy mobile suits at short to medium range, though their lack of guidance systems made them difficult to use against moving targets.

Known pilots

Notable pilots of the AMS-119 Geara Doga included:

  • Rezin Schnyder - Ace pilot who operated a custom blue-painted unit
  • Layla Lagiorr - Pilot of a surviving unit used by Neo Zeon remnants in UC 0122
  • Vincent Gleissner - Pilot during the Second Neo Zeon War
  • Cuaron Masuka - Neo Zeon pilot
  • Sergi Helfer - Neo Zeon pilot
  • Tokumin - Neo Zeon pilot

Variants

The AMS-119 Geara Doga spawned several variants to meet different operational requirements:

Heavy Armed Type

The Heavy Armed Type replaced the standard backpack with a heavy armament unit featuring two propellant tanks and the long-range Lange Bruno gun.

Commander variants

Though typically painted in olive drab-on-dark green colours, a handful of squad leaders and ace pilots were allowed to paint their units in custom colours and attach a squad leader’s antenna to the head, such as the blue-on-dark blue Geara Doga operated by ace pilot Rezin Schnyder.

Sleeves variants

Units used by The Sleeves in UC 0096 were repainted and bore the distinctive sleeve markings characteristic of the organisation. Full Frontal notably piloted a red-painted Geara Doga before acquiring the MSN-06S Sinanju.

Behind the scenes

Yutaka Izubuchi was the original mechanical designer for the Char’s Counterattack version, Hajime Katoki designed the Gundam Unicorn anime version, and Mika Akitaka created the Silver Phantom version. The design maintained the classic Zeon aesthetic whilst incorporating more modern mobile suit technology.

In Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, two Geara Dogas were disabled by shots from RX-93 ν Gundam’s Vulcan Guns and another unit was later destroyed by shots from the Vulcan Pod System of a RGM-89 Jegan piloted by Hathaway Noa. It is unclear why the Geara Doga’s armour was so weak.

Gunpla

The AMS-119 Geara Doga has been released in multiple Gunpla formats, including High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) and Master Grade (MG) versions. The Master Grade kit was particularly notable for its size and detail, featuring full articulation and the complete weapons loadout from the anime.
