Rezin Schnyder
Ace pilot of Neo Zeon who served during the Second Neo Zeon War.
Rezin Schnyder was an ace pilot of Neo Zeon who served during the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093. An extremely skilled and hot-headed pilot, she was known for her arrogant attitude and disregard for orders, as well as her distinctive blue AMS-119 Geara Doga.
Biography
Early life
Little is known about Rezin Schnyder’s background prior to joining Neo Zeon. She had established herself as an ace pilot by the time of the Second Neo Zeon War, earning recognition for her exceptional piloting skills and her willingness to take risks in combat.
Second Neo Zeon War
Rezin served as an ensign in Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon forces during the conflict against the Earth Federation in UC 0093. She was assigned a custom AMS-119 Geara Doga painted in her personal blue colour scheme, which distinguished her unit from the standard olive green mobile suits used by other Neo Zeon pilots.
Battle of Fifth Luna
Rezin participated in the Battle of Fifth Luna, where she demonstrated her exceptional piloting abilities. During the engagement, she successfully destroyed the Ra Cailum’s bulkhead and immobilised Kayra Su, though she was unable to finish off her opponent when Amuro Ray arrived as Federation reinforcements. When she prepared to engage Amuro directly, she was ordered to fall back and reluctantly complied.
Final engagement
During the second wave of battle near the Axis asteroid, Rezin launched a solo strafing run against the Federation fleet. Her aggressive tactics brought her close to the Ra Cailum, where she dealt heavy damage to the Federation flagship. However, her assault was cut short when she was shot down by a gun turret manned by Chan Agi. Unaware that the Psychoframe technology was enhancing Chan’s abilities, Rezin spent her final moments in shock as her cockpit exploded around her.
Personality & traits
Rezin Schnyder was characterised by her extreme confidence in her own abilities, which manifested as arrogance and contempt for authority. She regularly disobeyed orders and acted independently on the battlefield, believing her skills were sufficient to handle any situation. Her sarcastic and rude demeanour made her unpopular among her colleagues.
She displayed particular prejudice against Newtype pilots, dismissing Gyunei Guss as a “fake Newtype” and arguing that Quess Paraya did not belong on the battlefield regardless of her Newtype abilities. When Nanai Miguel offered her well-wishes before a sortie, Rezin sarcastically replied, “Oh gee, thanks a lot!” Her dismissive attitude towards authority was evident when mechanics complained about her habit of ignoring orders, to which she simply responded, “Yeah, whatever.”
Despite her abrasive personality, Rezin’s confidence was largely justified by her exceptional piloting skills. She demonstrated a sadistic enjoyment of combat and violence, having joined Neo Zeon primarily for the opportunity to engage in warfare rather than for any ideological commitment to the cause.
Skills & abilities
Rezin was recognised as an ace pilot within Neo Zeon, demonstrating exceptional mobile suit combat abilities. Her piloting skills were sufficient to outmanoeuvre Federation pilots and deal significant damage to enemy forces during the Second Neo Zeon War. She was particularly adept at close-quarters combat and showed remarkable reflexes and tactical awareness in battle.
Her combat style was characterised by aggressive, independent action, often launching solo attacks against superior numbers. This approach, while risky, proved effective in several engagements and allowed her to achieve notable successes against Federation forces.
Relationships
Gyunei Guss
Rezin had a antagonistic relationship with fellow Neo Zeon pilot Gyunei Guss. She openly dismissed him as a “fake Newtype” and showed little respect for his abilities or status within the organisation. Their mutual dislike was evident in their interactions, with Gyunei believing himself superior to the non-Newtype pilot.
Quess Paraya
Rezin was openly critical of Quess Paraya’s presence on the battlefield, arguing that the young woman did not belong in combat regardless of her Newtype abilities. This reflected Rezin’s general disdain for what she perceived as inexperienced pilots being given preferential treatment.
Nanai Miguel
Her relationship with Nanai Miguel was marked by sarcasm and disrespect. When Nanai offered her encouragement before missions, Rezin would respond with mocking remarks, demonstrating her unwillingness to accept support or guidance from her superiors.
Mecha
AMS-119 Geara Doga (Rezin Schnyder Custom)
Rezin piloted a custom AMS-119 Geara Doga painted in her distinctive blue colour scheme, which set her apart from the standard olive green units used by other Neo Zeon forces. This commander-type mobile suit was equipped with enhanced weapons including a commander’s beam rifle, beam saber, beam axe/pick, four Sturm fausts, and a folding shield.
The blue Geara Doga became synonymous with Rezin’s aggressive combat style and served as a symbol of her status as an ace pilot within Neo Zeon. She used this mobile suit effectively throughout the Second Neo Zeon War, destroying several Federation units before her final engagement.
Behind the scenes
Rezin Schnyder was created for Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack as one of the antagonistic Neo Zeon pilots. Her character was designed to represent the more ruthless and violence-oriented members of Char’s forces, contrasting with the more ideologically motivated characters.
Voice acting
In the original Japanese version, Rezin Schnyder was voiced by Kazue Ikura, a veteran voice actress known for roles such as Kaori Makimura in City Hunter and Leni Milchstrasse in Sakura Wars. Ikura was born on 23 March 1959, in Nagano, Japan, and has been active in the voice acting industry since the 1980s.
For the English dub of Char’s Counterattack, Rezin was voiced by Poppy Ona. In video game adaptations, particularly the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam series, she has been voiced by Lisa Ann Beley in English. Beley, born on 2 April 1975, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is known for her work on various anime series including Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Design
Rezin’s mobile suit design emphasised her status as an ace pilot through the distinctive blue colour scheme, which was unusual for Neo Zeon forces that typically used olive green or red colour schemes. This visual distinction helped establish her as a notable antagonist and made her mobile suit easily recognisable in combat scenes.
