Otto

Otto was an OZ officer who served as a subordinate of Zechs Merquise during the Eve Wars of AC 195. He is best remembered for his self-sacrifice during the liberation of the Sanc Kingdom, when he took the OZ-00MS Tallgeese against Zechs’s orders and deliberately crashed it into an Alliance base, destroying the facility at the cost of his own life.

History

Service under Zechs

Otto served as an OZ officer under the command of Zechs Merquise, the legendary “Lightning Count” who was secretly Milliardo Peacecraft, heir to the Sanc Kingdom throne. As one of Zechs’s subordinates, Otto would have witnessed his commander’s exceptional piloting skills and tactical brilliance firsthand.

During this period, Otto developed loyalty to Zechs that went beyond simple military hierarchy. He understood, at least to some degree, his commander’s personal stake in the conflicts unfolding around them, particularly regarding the Sanc Kingdom.

The Tallgeese incident

When Zechs Merquise attempted to pilot the OZ-00MS Tallgeese during operations related to the liberation of the Sanc Kingdom, the experience nearly proved fatal. The Tallgeese, a mobile suit designed to push the limits of human endurance, featured dangerously high acceleration capabilities that subjected its pilot to extreme G-forces. Even Zechs, one of the most skilled pilots in the Earth Sphere, found the Tallgeese’s performance nearly impossible to control.

Following Zechs’s harrowing experience with the mobile suit, Otto made a fateful decision. Acting against his commander’s orders, he took the Tallgeese and piloted it himself. Despite lacking Zechs’s extraordinary piloting skills, Otto successfully operated the dangerous machine long enough to position it for his intended purpose.

Sacrifice at the Sanc Kingdom

Otto flew the Tallgeese directly towards a United Earth Sphere Alliance base that was threatening the Sanc Kingdom. In a deliberate act of self-sacrifice, he crashed the mobile suit into the facility, causing a massive explosion that completely destroyed the Alliance base. Otto died instantly in the collision, but his sacrifice successfully eliminated a significant military threat to the kingdom.

His actions demonstrated both extraordinary courage and deep loyalty—not just to OZ as an organisation, but to Zechs personally and to the cause of the Sanc Kingdom’s liberation. By taking the Tallgeese against orders, Otto knowingly disobeyed military command, suggesting he understood the personal significance the Sanc Kingdom held for his commander and was willing to sacrifice his life for that cause.

Personality

Otto demonstrated exceptional loyalty and selflessness through his final actions. His willingness to disobey direct orders and pilot the notoriously dangerous Tallgeese—a mobile suit that had nearly killed even the legendary Zechs Merquise—showed both courage and determination.

His decision to sacrifice himself rather than simply completing a mission suggests a deeper understanding of the stakes involved in the Sanc Kingdom’s liberation. Whether he knew Zechs’s true identity as Milliardo Peacecraft remains unclear, but his actions indicated he recognized the personal importance of the kingdom to his commander and was willing to give his life to protect it.

The fact that Otto acted against orders also reveals independent thinking and a willingness to prioritise what he perceived as the greater good over military discipline. This moral courage, combined with his physical courage in piloting the Tallgeese, defined his character in his final moments.

Skills and abilities

Mobile suit piloting

Otto possessed sufficient piloting skills to operate the OZ-00MS Tallgeese, despite the mobile suit’s reputation as being nearly impossible to control. Whilst he clearly lacked Zechs Merquise’s exceptional abilities, he demonstrated competent enough handling to successfully position the Tallgeese for his suicide attack.

Combat determination

Otto’s ability to maintain control of the Tallgeese long enough to complete his mission, despite the extreme physical demands the mobile suit placed on its pilot, demonstrated remarkable determination and endurance.

Relationships

Zechs Merquise

Otto served as a subordinate officer under Zechs Merquise and developed deep loyalty to his commander. His willingness to sacrifice his life for a cause personally important to Zechs—the liberation of the Sanc Kingdom—demonstrated the strength of this loyalty. By acting against Zechs’s orders, Otto showed he prioritised his commander’s deeper goals over immediate military discipline.

Legacy

Otto’s sacrifice successfully destroyed a significant Alliance base threatening the Sanc Kingdom, contributing to the kingdom’s temporary liberation. His actions also prevented Zechs Merquise from having to risk his life again in the dangerous Tallgeese, preserving Zechs for the larger conflicts to come.

More importantly, Otto’s self-sacrifice exemplified the kind of personal loyalty and courage that motivated many soldiers during the Eve Wars. His willingness to give his life for his commander’s cause, even whilst disobeying direct orders, demonstrated that the conflicts of AC 195 were not simply about military objectives but about deeper principles and personal convictions.

For Zechs, Otto’s death likely served as another reminder of the cost of war—one more life lost in the struggle for the ideals Zechs’s family had championed. This loss would have contributed to Zechs’s increasingly conflicted feelings about his role in the ongoing conflicts.
