Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance
The second Gundam production to be done entirely in computer animation.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (機動戦士ガンダム 復讐のレクイエム, Kidō Senshi Gandamu Fukushū no Rekuiemu) is an original net animation series in the Gundam franchise co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks1 and SAFEHOUSE Inc. Set during the One Year War in Universal Century, it focuses on the European front of the conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.
The six-episode series directed by Erasmus Brosdau and written by Gavin Hignight premiered worldwide on Netflix on 17 October 2024.
Synopsis
In Universal Century 0079, the outbreak of war began when the Principality of Zeon declared its independence from the Earth Federation government. The Zeon forces initially maintained an advantage due to their new weapon, the mobile suit. However, they lacked the strength to fully conquer Earth, leading to a stalemate.
Eleven months into the war, as the Earth Federation Forces recapture a base in Zeon-occupied Eastern Europe, a Zeon composite battalion is dispatched to retake it. Among the Zeon forces is Iria Solari and her Red Wolf Squadron, a mobile suit team newly arrived from space.
Episodes
Episode 1: “Haunted Forest” (17 October 2024) – A Zeon force attacks a Federation base in Romania but finds it abandoned. Captain Iria Solari’s Red Wolf Squadron helps repel a Federation ambush, but a mysterious Gundam EX appears and decimates their forces.
Episode 2: “Broken” (17 October 2024) – Iria and survivor Kneeland LeSean regroup with Second Lieutenant Hayley Arhun’s unit. They use abandoned Zaku Tanks and a fuel truck diversion to escape the pursuing Gundam EX.
Episode 3: “Junkyard” (17 October 2024) – The survivors reach a Zeon-held junkyard commanded by Major Rolph Ronet and Captain Alfee Zydos. As Federation forces attack, mechanics rebuild two Zakus from salvaged parts.
Episode 4: “Night Caller” (17 October 2024) – A fierce battle ensues between the rebuilt Zakus and Federation forces. When ordered to steal a GM for study, Iria shows mercy to a retreating pilot, while learning the war is turning against Zeon.
Episode 5: “The River” (17 October 2024) – During an infiltration mission, Iria encounters a young Federation pilot. The Gundam EX appears and disables their stolen GMs, with LeSean sacrificing himself to ensure their escape.
Episode 6: “Convoy to Oblivion” (17 October 2024) – At Odessa Spaceport, Iria defends evacuation convoys against Federation forces. After a confrontation with the young Gundam EX pilot, she survives to join Zeon remnants in Africa, fighting to end wars that force children into combat.
Development
Conception
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance was conceived as a series targeting a global audience, with a focus on the European theatre of the One Year War. Writer and executive producer Gavin Hignight cited Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team as influences on the project.
Production
The series’ production was first announced at Anime Expo 2023, held on 3 July 2023 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.2 Writer and executive Producer Gavin Hignight appeared on stage with Celia Massingham, the star cast member of the series. Director Erasmus Brosdau later revealed in a video that the series would be told from the Zeon perspective.
The series is co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks (credited under its former studio name Sunrise) and SAFEHOUSE Inc. It is the second Gundam production to be done entirely in computer animation since Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO, and utilises Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 for its animation.
Wilbert Roget II, known for his work on video games such as Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2: Forsaken, composed the series’ music. Hiroaki Yura served as both animation producer and sound director. Kimitoshi Yamane designed the mecha in the series.
Release
Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance was produced specifically for global release. Netflix announced in early December 2023 that it would distribute the series worldwide as a web anime.
All six episodes were released simultaneously on 17 October 2024.
Reception
As the series has recently been released, reception information is pending. It currently has a 48% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.3
