The Festum are the silicon-based alien species in Fafner in the Azure. They threaten humanity not only through destruction but through assimilation, which challenges the concept of individual identity. The Mir is the highest form of Festum consciousness. Their question “Are You There” and their attempt to understand humans through assimilation drive the franchise’s themes of communication and coexistence. Fafner units are humanity’s main defence against them.
