The Mir is the highest evolution of Festum consciousness in Fafner in the Azure, controlling the collective hivemind. Its attempt to understand humanity through assimilation drives the primary conflict, whilst individuals called Esperanto who can communicate with the Festum offer a path towards coexistence. The Mir’s question “Are You There” and its incomprehensible silicon-based awareness embody the franchise’s themes of communication and the limits of understanding between species.
