Christina Mackenzie
Earth Federation test pilot and computer engineer who served as the pilot of the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex during the One Year War.
Christina Mackenzie was an Earth Federation Forces test pilot and computer engineer who served during the One Year War. She was the designated test pilot of the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex and played a crucial role in the final days of the conflict at Side 6.
Known to her friends and neighbours as “Chris”, Christina was born in UC 0058 in the Ribo colony of Side 6. Despite her youthful appearance and mild-mannered personality, she possessed exceptional piloting skills and a strong sense of responsibility that made her invaluable to the Federation’s mobile suit development programme.
Biography
Early life
Christina Mackenzie was born and raised in the Ribo colony of Side 6, where she lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie. She developed a close relationship with her young neighbour Alfred Izuruha, whom she often babysat and who regarded her as a big sister figure.
Her upbringing hinted that her parents had perhaps hoped for a son, which led Christina to develop a more tomboyish personality. She was raised to be able to stand up to the boys in her peer group, a trait that would later serve her well in her military career. During her childhood, Christina played baseball and kept her bat well into adulthood as a memento of those days.
Military training
After graduating from high school, Christina entered the Federation Space Force Academy in September UC 0076. Her exceptional abilities were evident from the start, and she graduated first in her class in UC 0078. While still in school, she aspired to become a fighter pilot and sought assignment to the War Technology Research Group, an elite unit within the Federation Forces.
However, the outbreak of the One Year War in UC 0079 altered her career trajectory. Rather than being assigned to frontline combat duty, Christina’s exceptional piloting skills and technical aptitude led to her selection for the mobile suit test programme. She was assigned to a test squadron under the command of the Space Force Integrated Technology Research Headquarters, where her impressive performance as a rookie pilot caught the attention of her superiors.
Service with the G-4 unit
When the test unit was reorganised and became the G-4 unit, Christina was selected as the full-time pilot for the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex. However, her role was not that of a traditional test pilot. By trade, she was a computer engineer, and her specific position was that of a “shoe-fitter”—a specialised role responsible for adjusting the Gundam NT-1’s educational computer to suit the intended pilot’s capabilities.
Initially stationed at Jaburo, Christina analysed the unit’s special learning computer before being transferred to the Federation’s Montana Base. There, she worked with other members of the G-4 testing unit to find an appropriate pilot for the unit before being sent back to space with the Alex.
Testing the G-IV
At Montana Base, Christina encountered Chuck Keith, an impulsive pilot who sought to become the G-IV’s test pilot. Christina was put off by his pushiness and lack of discipline, demonstrating her stern approach by putting him in an arm lock when he became too aggressive. Her concerns proved justified when Chuck lost control of the G-IV during testing, accidentally crashing through the hangar roof and into the nearby forest.
Christina and Yuki Nishioka, another member of the testing unit, were tasked with retrieving the G-IV. During this mission, Christina discovered that Chuck had instinctively tuned into the G-IV’s learning computer, which was identical to the Alex’s system. This created a dangerous situation where the computer could not distinguish between actual combat and training exercises. Christina courageously jumped into Chuck’s line of fire to prevent casualties and successfully disarmed the unit.
Following Chuck’s failure, the G-IV was assigned to Margaret, with whom Christina quickly developed a friendship. However, during the final test before the G-IV was to be shipped to the Arctic Base, Margaret disappeared. Unknown to the Federation forces, Margaret was actually a Zeon spy who had infiltrated their operations.
Confronting the Zeon spy
When Margaret failed to return from her test mission and communications with the G-IV were lost, Christina took matters into her own hands. Despite official orders to wait for a sanctioned search once weather conditions improved, she entered a refurbished MS-06 Zaku II to search for Margaret personally, with Yuki following in a jeep.
During her search, Christina encountered Minovsky particles in the area, indicating the presence of Zeon forces. She was forced to take cover when three enemy Zakus attacked her position with Fat Uncles. When Chuck Keith arrived in a RX-75-4 Guntank and shot down the enemy aircraft, Christina engaged the remaining three Zakus.
Upon finding Margaret, Christina was shocked to learn the truth about her identity as a Zeon spy. After a brief exchange, Christina was forced to engage Margaret in combat. During their confrontation, Christina was knocked unconscious when Margaret struck her Zaku’s cockpit. However, Margaret hesitated to deliver a fatal blow, and Yuki Nishioka took the opportunity to snipe Margaret from a distance.
Despite being wounded in the encounter, Christina volunteered to take over Margaret’s role as the test pilot. Initially rebuffed by base commanders who had little regard for “shoe-fitters”, she was eventually endorsed by the Argon unit, who pressured the commanders to allow her to become the G-IV’s test pilot with Yuki as her assistant.
Return to Side 6
Christina was assigned to the North Pole, where she and Yuki joined the transport to Side 6. She continued to run the Alex through simulations, though both she and the engineers noted that the suit was far too sensitive to be used effectively by her, as she was not a Newtype. The Alex had been specifically designed for Amuro Ray, the pilot of the original RX-78-2 Gundam.
Upon returning to her hometown at Ribo colony, Christina reunited with Alfred Izuruha, who initially did not recognise her. When it began to rain, Al helped her gather her scattered belongings and carry them into her house. Christina dried him off and gave him a fresh shirt to wear while his own dried, and the two shared tea together, rekindling their close friendship.
Encounter with Bernard Wiseman
One night, Christina spotted a young man sneaking around Al’s house. Thinking he was a burglar, she confronted him with her baseball bat and knocked him unconscious with a single blow. The man turned out to be Bernard Wiseman, whom Al claimed was his “stepbrother”. Despite this rocky first meeting, Christina and Bernie quickly became friends, with an obvious mutual attraction developing between them.
Unknown to Christina, Bernie was actually a Zeon soldier and member of the Cyclops Team, a special forces unit sent to Side 6 to destroy the Gundam Alex. Similarly, Bernie was unaware that Christina was the pilot of the very mobile suit he had been ordered to eliminate.
Christina concealed her true role as a test pilot from Bernie, instead claiming she only worked on data gathering for the military. Their relationship deepened over the following days, with Christina’s parents clearly approving of the young man their daughter had brought home.
Operation Rubicon
On 19 December UC 0079, the Cyclops Team launched Operation Rubicon, an assault on the Federation base housing the Gundam Alex. The operation used Mikhail Kaminsky’s MS-18E Kämpfer as a diversion while other team members infiltrated the base disguised as Federation soldiers.
As the Kämpfer rampaged through the base, destroying several RGM-79 GM units, Christina was called upon to pilot the Gundam Alex to stop the assault. Despite having limited combat experience, she successfully engaged Kaminsky in battle. Although the Alex’s Chobam Armor was destroyed by a chain mine that Kaminsky deployed, Christina managed to defeat the Kämpfer by firing the Alex’s gatling guns through its relatively thin armour.
Following her victory, Christina was scolded by her superiors for fighting in an urban area, despite her argument that more casualties would have occurred if she had not intervened. Most of the Cyclops Team, including Captain Hardy Steiner, were killed during the operation, leaving Bernard Wiseman as the sole survivor.
The final battle
With the failure of Operation Rubicon, Colonel Killing ordered the nuclear bombardment of Side 6 to eliminate all Federation forces in the colony. Bernard Wiseman, learning of this plan, initially considered fleeing the colony but ultimately decided to stay and attempt to destroy the Gundam Alex in a desperate bid to prevent the nuclear attack.
On 25 December UC 0079, Bernie launched a final assault against the Gundam in his damaged MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai. Christina, believing Side 6 to be under Zeon attack, sortied in the Alex to defend the colony. Despite having the tactical advantage of superior technology and firepower, Christina deliberately chose to engage Bernie in a forested area rather than open terrain to minimise the risk of civilian casualties.
Bernie had prepared for the battle by setting up large Christmas balloons and smoke bombs throughout the forest to create confusion and allow him to close range with the more powerful Gundam. During the intense combat, Bernie’s Zaku managed to damage the Alex’s arm and cockpit with its heat axe, while Christina grazed Bernie’s cockpit with her beam weaponry.
The battle concluded when both mobile suits charged each other for a final attack. Christina impaled the Zaku’s cockpit with her beam saber, unknowingly killing Bernie instantly. The resulting explosion also severely damaged the Gundam Alex, which lost its main camera to Bernie’s heat axe. Alfred Izuruha, who had rushed to the scene hoping to stop the battle, arrived only to witness its tragic conclusion.
Departure and aftermath
After recovering from her injuries, Christina prepared to leave Side 6 and return to Earth. During her farewell to Alfred Izuruha, she asked him to say goodbye to Bernard Wiseman for her, remaining unaware that she had killed him in battle. Al, unable to bear telling her the truth, agreed to her request and kept Bernie’s fate to himself.
Nearly three months after leaving the colony, Christina wrote a letter to Al, inquiring about Bernie’s well-being and reminiscing about their unusual first meeting. She expressed regret about accidentally hitting him with her baseball bat and spoke fondly of the memory. With peace gradually returning, she was uncertain when she would be able to leave the military but expressed hope to reunite with both Al and Bernie again and to travel to new places.
Christina’s letter revealed that she had found some measure of peace in the post-war period, though she remained unaware of the tragic irony that she had been the one to end Bernie’s life during their final battle.
Personality and traits
Christina Mackenzie possessed a unique blend of femininity and toughness that made her well-suited for both civilian life and military service. Described as a “girl next door” beauty with red hair and green eyes, she combined a mild-mannered appearance with a strong-minded personality and an unwavering sense of responsibility.
Her tomboyish upbringing had instilled in her the ability to stand up to anyone, regardless of gender, which served her well in the male-dominated military environment. This assertiveness was demonstrated when she put Chuck Keith in an arm lock to teach him respect and discipline. Despite her stern approach when necessary, Christina was fundamentally kind-hearted and caring towards those close to her, particularly her surrogate little brother Alfred Izuruha.
Christina maintained a harmonious relationship with her family, though she sensed that her parents had perhaps hoped for a son. Rather than resenting this, she used it as motivation to develop the strength and independence that would define her character. Her decision to pursue a military career stemmed partly from this tomboyish personality and her desire to prove herself in challenging circumstances.
In combat situations, Christina demonstrated remarkable courage and tactical thinking. Her decision to engage Bernard Wiseman in a forested area rather than open terrain, despite giving up her technological advantages, showed her consideration for civilian safety even in the heat of battle. This moral compass defined many of her actions throughout the war.
Skills and abilities
Christina’s exceptional piloting abilities were evident from her time at the Federation Space Force Academy, where she graduated first in her class. Her technical aptitude as a computer engineer made her uniquely qualified for the specialised role of “shoe-fitter”, responsible for calibrating mobile suit learning computers to match pilot capabilities.
Despite being classified as a test pilot rather than a combat specialist, Christina proved herself in actual battle conditions. Her victory over the veteran pilot Mikhail Kaminsky demonstrated that her skills extended far beyond mere technical competence. Her ability to adapt quickly to combat situations and make tactical decisions under pressure marked her as an exceptional pilot, even among the elite ranks of mobile suit operators.
Christina’s background in computer engineering gave her a deeper understanding of mobile suit systems than most pilots possessed. This knowledge proved invaluable in her work with the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex, allowing her to maximise the unit’s performance despite not being the Newtype pilot for whom it was originally designed.
Her physical conditioning was also noteworthy, as evidenced by her ability to knock out Bernard Wiseman with a single blow from her baseball bat and her stamina during extended mobile suit operations.
Relationships
Alfred Izuruha
Christina’s relationship with Alfred Izuruha was one of the most important in her life. As his neighbour and former babysitter, she served as a big sister figure to the young boy. Their bond was characterised by genuine affection and care, with Christina always showing patience and kindness towards Al despite his mischievous nature.
When Christina returned to Side 6 after her time on Earth, her reunion with Al was warm and natural. She demonstrated her nurturing side by drying him off when he was caught in the rain and providing him with fresh clothes. Their shared tea time represented a return to the comfort and stability of their pre-war relationship.
The tragedy of Christina’s final battle was compounded by Al’s decision to shield her from the truth about Bernard Wiseman’s death. His protective instinct towards her showed how their sibling-like relationship had evolved, with Al now taking on the role of protector rather than the protected child.
Bernard Wiseman
Christina’s relationship with Bernard Wiseman was defined by tragic irony. Their initial meeting, where she knocked him unconscious with a baseball bat after mistaking him for a burglar, gave way to a genuine romantic connection. Both were young people caught up in circumstances beyond their control, representing opposing sides of a conflict they barely understood.
Their attraction was obvious to everyone around them, including Christina’s parents, who welcomed Bernie into their home. The relationship developed naturally despite the web of deception surrounding both of their true identities. Neither knew the other’s military affiliation, creating a doomed romance that embodied the broader tragedy of the war.
Christina’s final letter to Alfred Izuruha, inquiring about Bernie’s well-being and expressing hope for their reunion, demonstrated the depth of her feelings. Her continued ignorance of his fate represented both a mercy and a tragedy, allowing her to preserve her memories of their time together without the burden of knowing she had been his killer.
Family relationships
Christina maintained strong bonds with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie. Her father was described as a well-built man who wore glasses and showed genuine concern for his daughter’s military service. Both parents clearly approved of Bernard Wiseman, welcoming him into their home and making their attraction to each other obvious to everyone around them.
The family dynamic reflected the stable, middle-class environment of Side 6, where civilian concerns took precedence over military matters. Christina’s parents represented the ordinary people caught up in the larger conflict, worried about their daughter’s safety but proud of her service to the Earth Federation.
Mecha
RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex
Christina’s primary mobile suit was the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex, an advanced prototype designed specifically for Newtype pilots. Despite not being a Newtype herself, she was selected as the unit’s test pilot due to her exceptional abilities and her role as a “shoe-fitter” responsible for calibrating the mobile suit’s learning computer.
The Alex represented the pinnacle of Earth Federation mobile suit technology during the One Year War. Its Chobam Armor provided additional protection, while its advanced sensors and weaponry gave it significant advantages over conventional mobile suits. Christina’s work with the Alex involved extensive simulation testing to prepare the unit for its intended recipient, Amuro Ray.
In combat, Christina demonstrated the Alex’s capabilities against Mikhail Kaminsky’s MS-18E Kämpfer, successfully defeating the veteran Zeon pilot through superior firepower and tactical positioning. Her final battle against Bernard Wiseman’s MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai showcased both the mobile suit’s advanced technology and Christina’s piloting skills, though the engagement resulted in significant damage to both units.
G-IV
During her time at Montana Base, Christina worked extensively with the G-IV, a prototype mobile suit that shared the same learning computer system as the Gundam Alex. Her experience with this unit provided valuable insights into the calibration process required for advanced mobile suit systems.
Christina’s interactions with the G-IV included supervising test flights by other pilots and eventually taking over as the primary test pilot after the failure of other candidates. Her work with this unit demonstrated her ability to adapt to different mobile suit configurations and her understanding of the technical requirements for effective pilot-machine interface.
MS-06 Zaku II
When searching for the missing pilot Margaret, Christina commandeered a refurbished MS-06 Zaku II, demonstrating her versatility as a pilot. Despite the unit being of Zeon origin and design, she successfully operated it in combat conditions against three enemy Zakus.
This engagement showed Christina’s ability to adapt quickly to unfamiliar mobile suit systems and her tactical acumen in combat situations. Her use of terrain and cover, combined with support from Chuck Keith’s Guntank, resulted in the successful elimination of the enemy forces and the rescue mission’s completion.
Behind the scenes
Christina Mackenzie was designed by Haruhiko Mikimoto, who served as character designer for Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. Her character represented a departure from the typical Gundam protagonist, being both female and a test pilot rather than a frontline combat pilot.
The character’s design emphasised her dual nature as both a capable military officer and an ordinary young woman caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Her red hair and green eyes made her visually distinctive while her practical military attire reflected her professional role within the Earth Federation Forces.
Voice acting
In the original Japanese version, Christina was voiced by Megumi Hayashibara, a renowned voice actress known for her work in numerous anime series. Hayashibara’s performance captured both Christina’s strength as a military pilot and her vulnerability as a young woman experiencing her first love during wartime.
The English dub featured multiple voice actresses across different releases. Wendee Lee provided Christina’s voice in the primary English dub, while Onalea Gilbertson and Nicole Leroux voiced the character in other English language versions, including the video game Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space.
Cultural impact
Christina Mackenzie holds the distinction of being the only female Gundam pilot featured in the climactic battle sequence of Mobile Suit Gundam Climax U.C., where players face off against the main Gundams of the Universal Century timeline. This recognition highlighted her unique position within the Gundam universe as a capable female pilot during an era when such characters were relatively rare.
Her story arc in War in the Pocket has been praised for its realistic portrayal of the personal costs of war and the tragedy of conflict between individuals who might otherwise have been friends or lovers. The character continues to appear in various Gundam video games and merchandise, maintaining her relevance to the franchise decades after her original appearance.
