Battle of A Baoa Qu

The Battle of A Baoa Qu (ア・バオア・クー攻防戦 A Baoa Kū Kōbōsen) was the final and most decisive engagement of the One Year War. Fought between the Earth Federation Forces and the Principality of Zeon on 31 December UC 0079 and 1 January UC 0080, the battle resulted in the destruction of Zeon’s last major stronghold and effectively ended the war.

The battle was fought at A Baoa Qu, Zeon’s massive asteroid fortress positioned at Side 3. The engagement saw some of the most intense fighting of the entire war, including the deaths of three members of the Zabi family, the legendary duel between Char Aznable and Amuro Ray, and the destruction of both the RX-78-2 Gundam and MSN-02 Zeong.

The battle marked the effective end of the Principality of Zeon as a fighting force and paved the way for the establishment of the Republic of Zeon under Federation control.

Prelude

Following the Battle of Solomon on 24 December UC 0079, the Earth Federation Forces had breached Zeon’s defensive perimeter and now threatened the space colonies of Side 3 directly. The Principality’s military situation had become desperate—its Earth-based forces were in retreat, its fleet was severely depleted, and internal political tensions within the Zabi family were reaching a breaking point.

A Baoa Qu represented Zeon’s last line of defence. The massive asteroid fortress, hollowed out and heavily fortified, mounted powerful beam cannons and housed Zeon’s remaining mobile suit forces. If the Federation could capture or destroy A Baoa Qu, the war would effectively be over.

Gihren Zabi, as Zeon’s supreme commander, prepared for a final stand. He believed that a decisive victory at A Baoa Qu could still turn the tide of the war, or at minimum, allow Zeon to negotiate favourable peace terms. To this end, he concentrated Zeon’s remaining forces at the fortress, including the prototype MSN-02 Zeong piloted by Char Aznable.

Unknown to Gihren, his sister Kycilia Zabi had learned of his role in their father’s death and was planning revenge. Meanwhile, their father Degwin Sodo Zabi was attempting to negotiate peace with the Federation, hoping to end the bloodshed.

Battle

Opening assault

The Federation fleet, under the overall command of General Revil, approached A Baoa Qu on 31 December UC 0079. The assault began with a massive naval bombardment, with Federation battleships and cruisers attempting to overwhelm the fortress’s defences with concentrated firepower.

Zeon’s fortress guns responded with devastating effect, their powerful mega-particle cannons tearing through Federation capital ships. The space around A Baoa Qu quickly filled with debris from destroyed vessels and mobile suits, creating a treacherous battlefield environment.

The White Base, carrying Amuro Ray and the RX-78-2 Gundam, joined the assault as part of the main fleet. Bright Noa led his crew into the most intense combat they had yet experienced.

Dozle’s last stand

Dozle Zabi, commander of Zeon’s Space Attack Force, took personal command of the fortress’s defence. When Federation forces breached the outer perimeter, Dozle launched in the experimental mobile armor MA-08 Big Zam, intending to turn the tide through overwhelming firepower.

The Big Zam’s I-field protected it from beam weapons, and its massive mega-particle cannons destroyed numerous Federation mobile suits and ships. For a time, Dozle’s desperate gambit seemed to be working, as the Federation assault faltered under the mobile armor’s devastating firepower.

However, Sleggar Law, piloting a Core Booster, managed to disable the Big Zam’s generators in a suicide attack. With its defences down, the Big Zam was destroyed by concentrated mobile suit fire. Dozle died in the explosion, becoming the first Zabi to fall in the battle.

Gihren’s atrocity

As the battle raged, Degwin Sodo Zabi approached the battlefield aboard the flagship Great Degwin under a white flag, intending to negotiate peace with General Revil. Gihren, viewing his father’s peace initiative as treason and an obstacle to Zeon’s “purification,” ordered the fortress’s Solar Ray weapon to fire.

The massive beam weapon obliterated the Great Degwin, killing Degwin instantly. The beam continued onward, also destroying much of the Federation fleet including General Revil’s flagship, killing the Federation’s supreme commander. This war crime horrified even many within Zeon’s ranks.

Kycilia Zabi, upon learning that Gihren had murdered their father, confronted her brother in A Baoa Qu’s command center. In a moment of cold fury, she shot Gihren in the head, killing him instantly and throwing Zeon’s chain of command into chaos.

Char vs Amuro

Amidst the larger battle, Char Aznable and Amuro Ray engaged in their final confrontation. Char, piloting the incomplete MSN-02 Zeong, clashed with Amuro’s Gundam inside the fortress.

The battle between the two aces was intense and personal, with both pilots pushing their machines and Newtype abilities to the limit. Lalah Sune, arriving in her MAN-08 Elmeth mobile armor, intervened to protect Char. In the confusion of battle, she was killed when she shielded Char from Amuro’s beam saber strike.

Lalah’s death devastated both pilots. Their duel continued with renewed ferocity, culminating in a close-quarters battle that left both the Zeong and Gundam severely damaged. The Zeong’s head section separated as an escape pod, but Char, emotionally shattered by Lalah’s death, was forced to flee the battlefield.

Amuro’s Gundam, with both legs destroyed and most systems failing, managed one final attack that pierced the Zeong’s torso. Both mobile suits were destroyed in the resulting explosions, though both pilots survived by ejecting.

Collapse of Zeon

With Gihren dead and the command structure in disarray, Zeon’s defence began to crumble. Kycilia attempted to rally the remaining forces and organize a retreat, but the momentum had shifted decisively to the Federation.

As Kycilia prepared to evacuate aboard her personal Zanzibar-class cruiser, Char Aznable—who had secretly been Casval Rem Deikun, son of Zeon’s founder—appeared to take his revenge on the Zabi family. Using a bazooka, he destroyed Kycilia’s ship, killing her and completing his vendetta against the family that had murdered his father.

With the Zabi family destroyed and command structure collapsed, remaining Zeon forces either surrendered or attempted to flee. Federation mobile suits pushed deeper into the fortress, securing key sectors and accepting the surrender of Zeon personnel.

Destruction of the fortress

As Federation forces secured A Baoa Qu, the fortress’s reactors began to overload from battle damage. A massive explosion consumed the asteroid, forcing both sides to evacuate. The explosion marked the symbolic end of the Principality of Zeon’s military power.

Amuro Ray, having escaped the destruction of his Gundam, was recovered by Federation forces. Char Aznable disappeared into the chaos of the battle’s aftermath, his fate unknown to both sides.

Aftermath

The Battle of A Baoa Qu effectively ended the One Year War. With A Baoa Qu destroyed, the Zabi family eliminated, and its military forces shattered, the Principality of Zeon ceased to exist as a fighting force.

On 1 January UC 0080, the acting Zeon government signed an armistice with the Earth Federation. Under the terms of the treaty, Side 3 became the Republic of Zeon, nominally independent but under Federation oversight. Zeon was required to disarm completely and accept Federation peacekeeping forces.

The human cost of the battle was staggering. Tens of thousands died in the engagement, adding to the already catastrophic casualties of the war. General Johann Abraham Revil, the Federation’s greatest military leader, was among the dead, killed by Gihren’s Solar Ray attack.

For the White Base crew, the battle marked the end of their journey. The ship had survived from Side 7 to the war’s conclusion, but many crew members had been lost along the way. Amuro Ray, who had begun the war as a civilian teenager, had become the Federation’s greatest ace and a legendary Newtype.

Legacy

The Battle of A Baoa Qu became the defining engagement of the One Year War and one of the most significant battles in the Universal Century. The battle demonstrated both the destructive potential of mobile suit warfare and the importance of Newtype abilities in combat.

The deaths of the Zabi family removed the primary architects of the war, though Zeon sympathizers would continue to cause conflict for decades. Char Aznable’s disappearance after achieving his revenge would lead to years of speculation about his fate, until his return during the Gryps Conflict.

The destruction of the RX-78-2 Gundam marked the end of the mobile suit that had changed the course of the war. However, its combat data would inform the development of future Federation mobile suits, including the mass-produced RGM-79 GM and eventually the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II.

The battle’s legacy extended beyond military significance. It represented the failure of Spacenoid independence movements to achieve liberation through force, setting the stage for the complicated political situation that would dominate the Universal Century for decades to come.

Behind the scenes

The Battle of A Baoa Qu served as the climactic finale of the original Mobile Suit Gundam television series, spanning episodes 41-43. Director Yoshiyuki Tomino crafted the battle to resolve multiple narrative threads simultaneously—the Char-Amuro rivalry, the fall of the Zabi family, and the conclusion of the One Year War.

The battle’s scope was unprecedented for an anime series at the time, featuring dozens of mobile suits and capital ships in simultaneous combat. Animation director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and mechanical designer Kunio Okawara worked to create memorable action sequences despite the production’s limited budget.

The deaths of Lalah Sune, the Zabi family members, and General Revil in rapid succession shocked audiences and established Gundam as a series willing to kill major characters. Tomino’s direction emphasized the tragedy and waste of war, with even “villain” characters like Dozle Zabi receiving dignified death scenes.

The battle has been recreated and referenced in numerous Gundam video games, including Federation vs. Zeon, Gihren’s Greed, and the Gundam Battle Operation series. Each recreation offers players the chance to replay or alter the outcome of this historic engagement.
