Autonomous Republic of Munzo

The Autonomous Republic of Munzo (ムンゾ自治共和国, Munzo Jiji Kyōwakoku) was the name used in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin for the independent state governing Side 3 before the rise of the Principality of Zeon. In other Universal Century sources the same polity is often referred to as the first Republic of Zeon or the Side 3 Republic.

History

Side 3 declared independence from the Earth Federation in UC 0058 under the leadership of Zeon Zum Deikun, who had developed Contolism and the Newtype theory. In The Origin, the new nation is explicitly named the Autonomous Republic of Munzo, with Deikun as Chairman and Degwin Sodo Zabi as Vice Chairman. The Zeon Party formed the political backbone of the republic, while internal factions such as the Zabi family and the Ral family vied for influence.

The Earth Federation responded with the Bardot Policy, cutting off resources to Side 3. Deikun created a colonial guard to defend against possible invasion, beginning the militarisation of the independence movement.

In UC 0068, Deikun collapsed and died during a speech declaring full independence. Degwin succeeded him and, in UC 0069, abolished the republic and proclaimed the Principality of Zeon, ending the Autonomous Republic of Munzo.

Organisation

The republic was centred in Zum City and governed Side 3 on the basis of Contolism and spacenoid self-determination. Leadership was vested in the Chairman (Deikun) with Degwin as Vice Chairman; the Zabi faction controlled much of the Zeon Party’s political and later military development.

Relationship to other Zeon states

The Autonomous Republic of Munzo is the same historical entity as the “first” Republic of Zeon described in other Universal Century media: the independent Side 3 state from UC 0058 until the declaration of the Principality in UC 0069. The Origin gives it the distinct name “Munzo,” while other sources may use “Republic of Zeon” or “Side 3 Republic” for that period.
