The AMX-004G Qubeley Mass Production Type was a mass-produced Newtype-use assault mobile suit developed by Neo Zeon.

The “G” variant code indicated that it was a mass production variation of the AMX-004 Qubeley.

History

The Principality of Zeon originally developed the AMX-001 Prototype Qubeley based on data from the MAN-08 Elmeth during the One Year War. When Zeon engineers fled to Axis, they brought the prototype’s blueprints with them. The design was refined using data from the MS-09R4 Psycommu Rick Dom “Schnee Weiss” to create the AMX-004 Qubeley.

In UC 0088, Neo Zeon developed two improved Qubeley units—the AMX-004-2 Qubeley Mk-II and AMX-004-3 Qubeley Mk-II—for ten-year-old Newtype Elpeo Ple and her clone Ple Two respectively. The success of these units led Glemy Toto to commission a mass-production version for his planned coup against Haman Karn.

The Qubeley Mass Production Type units were first deployed in January UC 0089 during the final stages of the First Neo Zeon War as Glemy initiated his civil war. Despite having an army of Ple Two clones piloting these units, the determination of Haman loyalists and their Newtype abilities resulted in a stalemate that severely depleted both Neo Zeon factions.

Some units survived the war. By UC 0096, the Vist Foundation had acquired a heavily damaged unit which they used to recondition Marida Cruz, formerly known as Ple Twelve, a surviving Ple Two clone.

Design

The AMX-004G Qubeley Mass Production Type was refined from the AMX-004-2 Qubeley Mk-II and AMX-004-3 Qubeley Mk-II for efficient mass production while maintaining high combat performance.

The mobile suit featured a panoramic monitor cockpit with linear seat located in its torso. Its armor was constructed from Gundarium alloy alloy developed at Axis. Early production models used a grey paint scheme, while later units adopted a black color scheme similar to the AMX-004-2 Qubeley Mk-II.

Psycommu system

Like its predecessors, the Qubeley Mass Production Type incorporated a psycommu system allowing Newtype pilots to control the mobile suit with their brainwaves. Since brainwaves were unaffected by Minovsky particle interference, this enabled precise control of remote weapons.

The mobile suit’s tail binder contained thirty funnels—eighteen more than the Qubeley Mk-II. Each funnel drew power from an energy capacitor that required periodic recharging by returning to the tail binder.

While the AMX-004-2 used the original Qubeley’s psycommu system, the AMX-004-3 featured an improved version with a psycowave amplifying headset. The mass production model refined this system further, optimizing it for Ple Two’s brainwave patterns to enable control of the increased number of funnels.

Propulsion

The Qubeley Mass Production Type was propelled by a pair of rocket thrusters generating 61,600 kg of thrust. For enhanced maneuverability, it featured twelve vernier thrusters and apogee motors integrated into the wing binders on its shoulders and the tail binder on its back, supporting Active Mass Balance Auto Control (AMBAC).

The mobile suit had two independent wing binders on each shoulder for precise movement control. Unlike most mobile suits which mounted main thrusters on the back, the Qubeley Mass Production Type’s thrusters were positioned under the wing binders to accommodate the tail binder.

Armaments

The Qubeley Mass Production Type’s standard weapons were hybrid beam sabers that could function as both beam guns and beam sabers, plus thirty remote-controlled funnels equipped with beam guns. It also carried a pair of active cannons providing greater firepower than its predecessors.

Hybrid beam sabers

A hybrid beam saber was stored in each forearm, functioning as beam guns when mounted and beam sabers when removed. In beam gun mode, they drew power directly from the mobile suit’s Minovsky reactor. The concentrated Minovsky particle beams could penetrate even the thickest armor, potentially destroying a mobile suit with a single hit.

When removed for beam saber mode, they used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles in a blade shape capable of cutting through almost any material. The sabers were powered by energy capacitors (E-caps) in their hilts which recharged when mounted in the forearms.

Active cannons

The mobile suit mounted a pair of active cannons on its backpack. These weapons had a wide firing arc, allowing attacks against targets both in front of and behind the mobile suit.

Funnels

The tail binder housed thirty remote-controlled funnels powered by E-caps. Though this allowed independent operation, the funnels needed to return to the binder periodically for recharging.

Each funnel incorporated a 1.3 megawatt beam gun along with main and vernier thrusters for mobility. The psycommu system enabled near-instantaneous control through the pilot’s brainwaves. Their small size and speed made them difficult to detect visually, while their range allowed the Qubeley to attack from beyond enemy visual range. Pilots could coordinate the funnels to attack from multiple angles simultaneously, leaving enemies with few escape options.

Known pilots

  • Ple Two clones
  • Marida Cruz (formerly Ple Twelve)

Behind the scenes

Nagano Mamoru was the original mechanical designer.

The Qubeley was named after Cybele, the Greek goddess associated with mountains, city walls, nature and lions.

Some sources incorrectly designate this mobile suit as the AMX-017. Canon sources consistently use AMX-004G.
