ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior

The ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior was a ZAFT mass-production mobile suit that succeeded the ZGMF-1017 GINN and served as the primary mobile suit for ZAFT forces during the Second Alliance-PLANT War in Cosmic Era 73. The ZAKU Warrior represented a significant advancement over the GINN, featuring Phase Shift Armor and improved weaponry that made it one of the most capable mass-production mobile suits of its era.

Model Code Explanation: The “ZGMF” designation indicated a ZAFT Zero-Gravity Maneuver Fighter, whilst “1000” was its model number. “ZAKU Warrior” was the codename, paying homage to the iconic Zaku mobile suits of the Universal Century timeline whilst establishing the ZAKU series as ZAFT’s new standard mobile suit line.

History

The ZAKU Warrior was developed by ZAFT following the First Alliance-PLANT War, entering service in CE 73 as the organisation’s new primary mobile suit. The mobile suit was designed to replace the GINN, incorporating lessons learned from the previous conflict and utilising advanced technologies that had become more practical for mass production.

The ZAKU Warrior’s development reflected ZAFT’s evolution in mobile suit technology, as the organisation sought to maintain its technological edge whilst improving the capabilities of its mass-production forces. The mobile suit’s introduction coincided with the outbreak of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, during which it served as ZAFT’s standard combat unit.

Throughout the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the ZAKU Warrior formed the backbone of ZAFT’s mobile suit forces, participating in numerous operations and battles. The mobile suit’s performance proved effective against Earth Alliance mobile suits, though it faced challenges when confronted with more advanced units like the Gundam-type mobile suits.

Notable pilots who operated the ZAKU Warrior included Yzak Joule, who utilised a customised ZAKU Warrior equipped with a gunner wizard pack, demonstrating the mobile suit’s versatility and adaptability to different combat roles and pilot preferences.

Design

The ZAKU Warrior featured a design that evolved from the GINN whilst establishing a new visual identity for ZAFT mobile suits. The mobile suit incorporated Phase Shift Armor, providing superior defensive capabilities compared to the GINN’s conventional armour. This defensive improvement made the ZAKU Warrior significantly more resilient against physical attacks.

The mobile suit’s frame was designed for improved performance and versatility, allowing it to operate effectively in both space and terrestrial environments. The ZAKU Warrior’s appearance maintained the angular aesthetic characteristic of ZAFT mobile suits whilst incorporating more refined design elements that reflected its advanced capabilities.

The ZAKU Warrior’s power plant utilised an ultracompact energy battery, providing sufficient power for extended operations. However, the mobile suit’s Phase Shift Armor system consumed significant power, requiring careful energy management during extended combat operations.

Wizard pack system

One of the ZAKU Warrior’s most significant features was its wizard pack system, which allowed the mobile suit to be equipped with specialised equipment packs that modified its combat capabilities. These packs included:

  • Gunner wizard pack – Enhanced long-range combat capabilities with beam cannons and missile systems
  • Slash wizard pack – Improved close-combat capabilities with additional beam weapons
  • Blaze wizard pack – Enhanced mobility and firepower with booster units

The wizard pack system made the ZAKU Warrior highly versatile, allowing pilots to adapt the mobile suit to different combat roles and mission requirements. This adaptability was one of the mobile suit’s greatest strengths, enabling ZAFT to deploy it effectively across various theatres of the war.

Armaments

The ZAKU Warrior’s standard weapons were a beam assault rifle for ranged attacks and a beam axe for melee combat.

MMI-M633 beam assault rifle

The ZAKU Warrior’s primary ranged weapon was an MMI-M633 beam assault rifle, providing effective firepower against most targets. The beam weapon represented a significant improvement over the GINN’s conventional weapons, offering superior penetration and damage capabilities.

MA-M8 beam axe

The ZAKU Warrior carried an MA-M8 beam axe for close-combat engagements, providing effective melee capabilities. The beam weapon offered superior cutting power compared to physical blades, making it highly effective in close-quarters combat.

Shield

The ZAKU Warrior carried a defensive shield that could protect against both physical and beam attacks, providing essential protection in combat situations. The shield’s design incorporated improved defensive capabilities compared to earlier ZAFT mobile suits.

Wizard pack armaments

When equipped with wizard packs, the ZAKU Warrior could utilise additional weapons systems specific to each pack type, significantly expanding its combat capabilities and versatility.

Known pilots

Numerous ZAFT pilots operated the ZAKU Warrior throughout the Second Alliance-PLANT War, as it was the standard ZAFT mobile suit. Notable pilots included:

  • Yzak Joule – Utilised a customised ZAKU Warrior with gunner wizard pack

Behind the scenes

The ZAKU Warrior was designed by Kimitoshi Yamane for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. The mobile suit’s name “ZAKU” pays homage to the iconic Zaku mobile suits of the Universal Century timeline, whilst establishing the ZAKU series as ZAFT’s new standard mobile suit line in the Cosmic Era timeline.

The mobile suit’s design reflects the evolution of ZAFT mobile suit technology following the First Alliance-PLANT War, incorporating advanced systems like Phase Shift Armor that had previously been limited to prototype units.
