Zagato is the High Priest in Magic Knight Rayearth who imprisons Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro, causing the world to collapse. The Magic Knights are summoned to defeat him—but the series reveals his actions stem from love for Emeraude rather than malice, and that Emeraude herself summoned the knights to kill her, subverting the rescue-the-princess narrative.
