Coexistence is a central theme in Fafner in the Azure: whether true understanding between humanity and the Festum is possible without assimilation and the loss of individual identity. The presence of Esperanto—humans who can communicate with the Festum—offers hope for coexistence, whilst the Mir’s drive to understand humanity through assimilation embodies the conflict. The franchise asks whether survival is worth preserving if it requires abandoning one’s essential humanity.
