MA-06 Val-Walo
Space combat mobile armor developed by the Principality of Zeon.
The MA-06 Val-Walo was a space combat mobile armor developed by the Principality of Zeon during the final weeks of the One Year War. It was intended to serve as both an anti-ship unit and a close combat unit against mobile suits.
The “MA” in the model code indicated it was a mobile armor, and “06” denoted its development number in the mobile armor series. The name “Val-Walo” was believed to be derived from the Latin term “Valere” meaning “to be strong”.
History
The MA-06 Val-Walo was developed in the last weeks of the One Year War as a successor to the MA-05 Bigro. Whereas the Bigro was designed for anti-ship assaults, the Val-Walo was intended to serve as both an anti-ship unit and as a close combat unit against mobile suits. Due to its late entry into the war, only three units were built at Granada during the war, and only saw combat at A Baoa Qu.
One unit survived the war and found its way into the ownership of former Zeon pilot Kelley Layzner, who kept his Val-Walo hidden at his junkyard in the depths of the Lunar city Von Braun. In UC 0083, Kelley’s old friend and wingmate Anavel Gato invited him to join the Delaz Fleet in their Operation Stardust offensive.
Kelley jumped at the chance, rebuilding the Val-Walo and modifying it so that he could pilot it in his one-armed condition. When Cima Garahau officially purchased the Val-Walo from Kelley on behalf of the Delaz Fleet, she intended to assign one of her own pilots to fly the mobile armor. Desiring to prove himself, Kelley launched the Val-Walo and challenged the Earth Federation Forces’ assault carrier Albion, docked at Von Braun.
The Val-Walo was subsequently destroyed in a duel against the RX-78GP01Fb Gundam GP01Fb “Zephyranthes” Full Burnern on Luna’s surface, with Kelley losing his life in the process.
Design
Based on the MA-05 Bigro, the Val-Walo featured form and structure similarities with the MAM-07 Grublo. The mobile armor was equipped with a powerful mega particle cannon, anti-air beam guns, vulcan guns, and large claw arms, making it well-suited to both anti-ship and anti-mobile suit missions.
One of the Val-Walo’s most unique features was the cockpit modification for pilots with one arm, making it one of only two known Zeon mobile weapons with such accommodation (the other being the MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom).
The mobile armor measured 68.0 metres in overall length, 46.0 metres in width, and 22.5 metres in height, making it substantially larger than contemporary mobile suits. Its massive size was compensated by powerful propulsion systems generating 720,000 kg of total thrust.
Armaments
The Val-Walo’s armaments were specifically designed for both anti-ship and anti-mobile suit combat.
Large mega particle cannon
A powerful beam weapon mounted on the underside of the Val-Walo. Even a glancing hit was capable of melting the RX-78GP01-Fb Gundam “Zephyranthes” Full Burnern’s shield. The cannon drew vast amounts of energy from the mobile armor’s reactor, allowing it to fire beams capable of destroying multiple battleships in a single shot.
Pincer claw arms
A pair of articulated claw arms were mounted on the underside of the Val-Walo which it used to seize and crush enemy mobile suits. These large mechanical claws served as the mobile armor’s primary close-combat weapons, allowing it to physically grapple with enemy units.
Anti-aircraft beam guns
A pair of retractable beam guns mounted in the “wings” of the Val-Walo for defensive purposes. These weapons provided protection against incoming missiles and enemy aircraft.
Vulcan guns
The Val-Walo was equipped with four 110 mm vulcan guns for point defence and anti-personnel operations. These rapid-fire weapons were effective against lightly armoured targets.
Missile pods
The Val-Walo was equipped with a pair of 2-tube missile pods for medium-range engagements, providing additional firepower against multiple targets.
Plasma leaders
The Val-Walo’s most unique weapon was the Plasma Leader, an improved variant of the Adzam Leader used by the MAX-03 Adzam, which could disable enemies caught within its electromagnetic field. A trio of plasma leaders were stored at the back of the Val-Walo. When used, they launched from the mobile armor and lodged in the ground in a triangle formation around an enemy mobile suit, whereupon they jointly generated an electromagnetic field that immobilized the enemy.
