MAM-07 Grublo

The MAM-07 Grublo was a prototype underwater mobile armor developed by MIP Company for the Principality of Zeon.

The “MA” in the type code indicated it was a mobile armor, and the “M” meant it was amphibious. The “07” model number denoted it was the seventh design for this type.

History

The MIP Company developed the MAM-07 Grublo from the MA-05 Bigro in just one and a half months. Three units were constructed at the submarine dock in the San Diego base, with testing conducted in the Gulf of Mexico.

One unit was assigned to Char Aznable’s “Mad Angler” unit and piloted by Jukon-class submarine captain Flanagan Boone. The Grublo caused severe damage to the Earth Federation Forces assault carrier White Base during its journey across the Atlantic Ocean to South America, before being destroyed by Amuro Ray in the RX-78-2 Gundam.

The remaining two units continued operations against Federation fleets until the war’s end, when they were seized off the coast of Madagascar.

Design

The MAM-07 Grublo combined submarine and mobile suit technologies to create an effective anti-ship weapon. Unlike other Zeon aquatic mobile weapons such as the MSM-03 Gogg, it lacked a mega particle cannon. While plans existed to mount such a weapon on the nose for mass-production units, the Grublo never progressed beyond the prototype stage.

For propulsion, the Grublo used thermonuclear hydrojet thrusters similar to Zeon’s amphibious mobile suits. This system provided enough range for the mobile armor to circumnavigate the globe independently.

Armaments

The Grublo’s standard weapons were retractable claw arms for close combat, torpedo launchers for ship and shore attacks, and surface-to-air missiles for aerial defence.

Claw arms

The mobile armor’s primary close combat weapons were a pair of large, sharp claws mounted on long arms. These normally retracted inside the Grublo’s body when not in use to reduce water resistance. In combat, the claws could deliver devastating damage by combining their inherent strength with the momentum of the mobile armor.

7-tube torpedo launcher

Two 7-tube torpedo launchers mounted in the main body served as the Grublo’s main anti-ship weapons. Each tube contained three projectiles, giving a total payload of 42 torpedoes. Even glancing hits from these weapons could significantly damage enemy mobile suits.

Surface-to-air missile launcher

For engaging aerial targets, the Grublo carried two surface-to-air missile launchers in its body. Each launcher contained eight naval-use missiles, primarily used against military targets near shorelines such as docks or shipyards.
