Eledore Massis

Eledore Massis (エレドア・マシス, Eredoa Mashisu) was a corporal who served with the 08th Mobile Suit Team during the One Year War. He operated the Type 74 Hover Truck as the team’s sonar expert and communications specialist, partnering with Michel Ninorich in providing tactical support to the mobile suit pilots.

Biography

Early service

Eledore was assigned to the 08th Mobile Suit Team as part of the Kojima Battalion in Southeast Asia during UC 0079. He was the second oldest member of the team, after Karen Joshua, and served as a veteran presence despite his often unserious attitude towards military duties.

One Year War service

When Shiro Amada assumed command of the 08th MS Team, Eledore continued his role as the team’s sonar expert and communications operator. He partnered with the young Michel Ninorich in operating the Type 74 Hover Truck, serving as both mentor and frequent sparring partner to the newcomer. Despite their occasional arguments, the two formed an effective team in providing battlefield support to the mobile suit pilots.

Eledore’s expertise with sonar equipment proved invaluable during combat operations. His excellent hearing, honed through his passion for music, allowed him to identify and track enemy mobile suits and vehicles even when visual contact was impossible. He could pinpoint exact locations of moving objects through the Hover Truck’s advanced sensor systems, providing crucial intelligence to the team’s mobile suit pilots.

Capture and injury

In the fifth month of the war, Eledore received notification that one of his songs had achieved its major debut on radio. Excited by this news and against standing orders, he left the base with Michel to celebrate in a nearby village. The two were captured by Principality of Zeon forces who had taken control of the settlement whilst repairing the damaged Apsalus mobile armour.

Confined to the basement of a hotel, Eledore devised an escape plan using a captured Zaku Tank. However, his severe claustrophobia prevented him from properly sealing the cockpit hatch during the escape attempt. Though he succeeded in breaking free from Zeon custody, he was shot and wounded during the getaway.

Karen Joshua provided emergency medical treatment that stabilised Eledore’s condition, preventing serious injury. He was evacuated to a field hospital where he made a request to a radio DJ to play his newly debuted song. After making a full recovery, he returned to active duty with the 08th MS Team from the ninth month of the war.

Final operations

Eledore continued to serve with the 08th MS Team through the final phases of the One Year War, providing essential communications and reconnaissance support during the team’s most challenging missions. His loyalty to his comrades and dedication to duty, despite his casual attitude, proved instrumental in the team’s survival and success.

Personality & traits

Eledore possessed an extremely carefree and unserious attitude that seemed ill-suited to military service. He was notorious for listening to loud music through headphones whilst on duty and decorating the Hover Truck with pin-up posters. His primary interest lay in pursuing a career as a professional musician after the war, and he regularly submitted demo recordings to music producers and radio stations.

Despite his seemingly lackadaisical approach to soldiering, Eledore proved reliable when combat situations demanded focus and professionalism. He took his responsibilities seriously during battle, understanding that his comrades’ lives depended on accurate intelligence and communications support.

Eledore was naturally flirtatious and maintained a playful, teasing relationship with his teammates. He particularly enjoyed provoking Karen Joshua with his casual behaviour and inappropriate jokes, though he gradually developed genuine romantic feelings for her. His partnership with Michel Ninorich was characterised by frequent bickering and arguments, though the two worked effectively together when necessary.

Skills & abilities

Sonar expertise

Eledore possessed exceptional auditory abilities that made him uniquely qualified as a sonar operator. His musician’s ear allowed him to distinguish between different mechanical signatures and identify specific mobile suit types through sound analysis alone. Using the Type 74 Hover Truck’s sophisticated sensor equipment, he could track enemy movements across considerable distances and provide precise location data to mobile suit pilots.

Communications

As the team’s primary communications specialist, Eledore maintained contact between the mobile suit pilots, command headquarters, and allied units. His experience and technical knowledge of radio equipment proved essential for coordinating complex battlefield operations and ensuring information flowed efficiently throughout the chain of command.

Musical talent

Eledore was a skilled songwriter and performer who seriously pursued a musical career alongside his military duties. His compositions achieved professional recognition during the war, with at least one song receiving radio airplay. This artistic talent enhanced his natural auditory abilities and contributed to his effectiveness as a sonar operator.

Relationships

Karen Joshua

Eledore maintained a complex relationship with Karen Joshua, the team’s second-in-command. Initially characterised by his persistent flirtation and her irritated responses to his casual behaviour, their dynamic evolved as Eledore developed genuine feelings for her. Karen’s medical treatment of his combat injuries marked a turning point in their relationship, though her brusque personality and professional focus continued to create barriers between them.

Michel Ninorich

Michel Ninorich served as Eledore’s partner in the Type 74 Hover Truck, functioning as navigator and gunner whilst Eledore handled sonar operations and communications. Despite frequent arguments and personality clashes, the experienced Eledore effectively mentored the younger soldier and the two formed a competent team. Their capture by Zeon forces demonstrated both the consequences of Eledore’s impulsive decisions and their mutual loyalty under pressure.

Shiro Amada

As team commander, Shiro Amada initially struggled to manage Eledore’s undisciplined behaviour and casual attitude towards military protocol. However, Shiro came to appreciate Eledore’s combat effectiveness and technical expertise, recognising that his unorthodox approach masked genuine competence and dedication to his comrades’ welfare.

Equipment

Type 74 Hover Truck

Eledore operated the Type 74 Hover Truck (M353A4 Bloodhound), a specialised support vehicle equipped with advanced sonar and communications equipment. The vehicle’s underground sonar probe allowed detection of enemy forces even when traditional radar systems failed due to Minovsky particle interference. Eledore’s expertise with this equipment made him indispensable for battlefield reconnaissance and intelligence gathering.

The Hover Truck also served as a mobile command post, enabling real-time coordination between mobile suit pilots and providing tactical support during extended operations. Its 20 mm vulcan gun offered limited defensive capabilities, though the vehicle primarily relied on mobility and concealment for protection.

Behind the scenes

Eledore Massis was voiced by Keiji Fujiwara in the Japanese version and Eddie Frierson in the English dub. Fujiwara, who passed away from cancer on 12 April 2020 at age 55, was a prolific voice actor known for roles including Hiroshi Nohara in Crayon Shin-chan, Maes Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist, and the Japanese voice of Tony Stark/Iron Man.

The character’s surname has appeared in different spellings in various official sources, including “Machis” and “Mathis,” though “Massis” is used in the official English release. His claustrophobia was introduced as a character trait that prevented him from piloting mobile suits, explaining his role as support crew despite the team’s need for additional pilots.

The “Anaheim Journal” mentioned Eledore’s music being broadcast on radio, suggesting his artistic ambitions achieved some measure of success during the war.
