Cucuruz Doan

Cucuruz Doan (ククルス・ドアン, Kukurusu Doan) was a Principality of Zeon mobile suit pilot who deserted from military service to care for war orphans on a remote island during the One Year War. His story explored themes of redemption, the personal cost of warfare, and whether soldiers could atone for their actions by protecting the innocent.

Biography

Cucuruz Doan served as a mobile suit pilot in Zeon’s Earth Attack Force before deserting to care for war orphans on a remote island during the One Year War.

Military Service

Doan served as a mobile suit pilot in Zeon’s Earth Attack Force, piloting a customised MS-06F Zaku II. During his service, he participated in combat operations on Earth, killing both enemy soldiers and civilians whilst witnessing and contributing to the One Year War’s brutality. He accumulated psychological burdens from his actions in combat that weighed heavily on his conscience. Unlike most soldiers who continued fighting or rationalised their actions, Doan was unable to reconcile his role in warfare with his conscience.

Desertion and Redemption

The Island

Doan deserted from Zeon forces and retreated to a remote island where he found war orphans—children whose families were killed in the fighting. He decided to care for them rather than continue as a soldier, using his mobile suit for agricultural work instead of combat in an attempt to create a sanctuary isolated from the war. The island became Doan’s attempt at redemption—protecting children rather than killing, nurturing life rather than destroying it.

Life with Orphans

On the island, Doan raised multiple war orphans, teaching them survival skills whilst protecting them from Zeon forces searching for him. He used his Zaku for heavy labour such as farming and construction, attempting to provide normalcy amidst war’s chaos. This represented Doan’s belief that he could atone for his wartime actions by protecting innocent lives.

Encounter with Amuro Ray

When Amuro Ray arrived on the island (separated from the White Base), their meeting became a pivotal exploration of soldiers’ consciences.

Initial Conflict

Doan confronted Amuro to protect the children and his sanctuary, leading to mobile suit combat between Doan’s Zaku and Amuro’s Gundam. Both pilots demonstrated reluctance to escalate violence, and Doan’s combat skill remained evident despite his desertion from active service.

Mutual Understanding

Amuro and Doan developed understanding through their encounter. Amuro learned about Doan’s past and current life with the orphans, whilst Doan recognised Amuro as a fellow soldier burdened by combat. Both struggled with their roles as killers, sharing recognition that warfare destroyed innocence. Their conversation revealed the psychological toll that combat took on those who fought.

Final Battle

When Zeon forces arrived seeking Doan, he fought to protect the children and island. Amuro assisted despite Doan being an enemy deserter, and together they defended the sanctuary from the attacking forces. After the battle, Doan chose to remain on the island. Amuro departed, leaving Doan to his chosen path of protecting children rather than continuing as a soldier.

Legacy

Cucuruz Doan represented soldiers who could not continue killing during the One Year War, questioning military duty when it required atrocities and choosing conscience over orders. His desertion was not cowardice but a moral choice – he could not reconcile continued combat with his conscience. His character explored whether refusing to fight could itself be an act of courage.

Doan’s care for orphans explored whether soldiers could atone for killing through protecting life, and whether creating a sanctuary compensated for past destruction. His story asked whether redemption was possible for those who had killed, and demonstrated how one person could make a difference for those they saved. The answer remained ambiguous – Doan found peace, but his past could not be erased.

The island represented the possibility of choosing non-violence even during war, creating a space of peace amidst conflict. Doan’s use of military tools (his mobile suit) for nurturing rather than destruction symbolised the transformation from warrior to protector. His story suggested that individuals could opt out of war’s violence, though at great personal cost.

Doan served as a mirror for Amuro Ray. Both were skilled pilots burdened by killing, and both questioned their roles as soldiers. Doan showed one possible future – abandoning warfare for redemption – whilst Amuro chose to continue fighting. However, Amuro understood Doan’s choice, recognising it as a legitimate response to the moral burden of combat.

Behind the Scenes

‘Cucuruz Doan’s Island’ (Episode 15) was created for Mobile Suit Gundam as a standalone episode exploring anti-war themes through a deserter’s story. Director Tomino Yoshiyuki used Doan to examine whether soldiers could atone for warfare’s violence.

The episode was notably excluded from some compilations and international releases, but remained beloved by fans for its exploration of moral complexity and alternative to constant warfare. The image of a Zaku used for farming rather than combat became iconic – representing swords beaten into ploughshares.

In 2022, a film adaptation (Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island) was produced, demonstrating the episode’s enduring significance and Doan’s resonance with audiences.

Doan’s choice to remain on the island protecting children rather than return to either Zeon or Federation forces suggested that sometimes the most moral choice was refusing to participate in unjust conflict – a radical position for military fiction.
