Anno Hideaki
Key animator on Char's Counterattack; creator of Evangelion.
Anno Hideaki (庵野 秀明, Anno Hideaki, born 22 May 1960) is a Japanese animator, director, and screenwriter. He worked as a key animator on Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack (1988) and is best known as the creator and director of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Gundam work
Anno contributed to Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack as a key animator under character designer Yasuhiko Yoshikazu and director Tomino Yoshiyuki. His work on the film came during the period when he was active at Gainax, before his breakout as director of Evangelion.
Career beyond Gundam
Anno co-founded Gainax and directed Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–1996), which became one of the most influential anime series of the 1990s. He later founded Khara and directed the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. His mechanical and action animation on Char’s Counterattack is often cited as part of the film’s strong visual legacy.

Anno has cited Mobile Suit Gundam and Yoshiyuki Tomino’s work as influences. His involvement in Char’s Counterattack is noted in the film’s credits and in production histories of the Gundam franchise.
