AMX-101 Galluss-J
Prototype close-range combat mobile suit developed by Neo Zeon.
The AMX-101 Galluss-J was a prototype close-range combat mobile suit developed by Neo Zeon for urban warfare and mop-up operations during the First Neo Zeon War.
The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model and the “X” designated it as an experimental mobile suit. The “101” in the model code indicated it was from the 100-series of prototype designs developed by Neo Zeon. The “Galluss” designation was derived from ancient terminology for a rooster, reflecting its aggressive close-combat role.
History
Neo Zeon developed the Galluss-J in anticipation of their assault on Earth during the First Neo Zeon War. The mobile suit was designed to work in concert with the AMX-102 Zssa, with the Zssa providing long-range bombardment and the Galluss-J serving as a follow-up unit for urban combat and cleanup operations.
One of the earliest Galluss-J units to be built was employed by Neo Zeon officer Mashymre Cello, who would use this mobile suit in an attempt to ferret out the refugee AEUG battleship Argama from its hiding place inside Side 1’s Shangri-La colony. During this operation, Mashymre Cello deployed the Galluss-J in several engagements against the AEUG forces.
The Galluss-J saw limited production despite its effectiveness. The ease of its manufacture led the Galluss-J to see at least limited production on Neo Zeon’s frontlines. Several units later survived the First Neo Zeon War and were used by Zeon remnants in an attack on Australia’s Torrington Base in UC 0096.
Design
The AMX-101 Galluss-J was designed by Neo Zeon to serve as an urban combat mobile suit. In that capacity, it would serve as a “mopping up” unit after an area had been bombarded, likely from an AMX-102 Zssa. The design philosophy drew inspiration from successful urban combat mobile suits from the One Year War.
The scientists of Axis seemed to have drawn inspiration from the MS-07 Gouf mobile suit series that appeared during the One Year War, and was noted for its excellent urban combat abilities. This influence was most evident in the Galluss-J’s distinctive finger-mounted machine guns and emphasis on close-quarters combat capability.
The Galluss-J featured a unique extendable arm mechanism that added significant force to its punching attacks. The arms of the Galluss-J can retract and then extend to add power to its punching attacks in hand-to-hand combat. This system allowed the mobile suit to deliver devastating melee attacks whilst maintaining the element of surprise.
The mobile suit was powered by a Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor generating 2,840 kW of output. Its propulsion system comprised rocket thrusters with a total output of 121,900 kg, distributed across multiple thruster units of varying output levels.
Armaments
Apart from several missile launchers, the Galluss-J does not possess any powerful long-range weapons, instead specializing in close combat battle. The mobile suit’s armament configuration reflected its intended role as an urban combat specialist.
Energy gun/4-tube missile pod
Hand carried in use, this weapon serves as the Galluss-J’s primary means of ranged combat. It has a 4-tube missile pod on its left side and has a power rating of 3.8 MW. This combination weapon provided the Galluss-J with both beam attack capability and limited missile firepower for engaging multiple targets.
The energy gun component could fire concentrated particle beams effective against mobile suit armor, whilst the integrated missile pod provided additional firepower against lightly armoured targets or for area suppression.
Finger launcher machine guns
Like the Gouf, the Galluss-J was equipped with a set of light machine guns in the fingers of its left hand, weapons that were useless at long range but effective in close range. These four machine guns were mounted within the fingertips of the left hand, following the design precedent established by the MS-07B Gouf.
The finger-mounted machine guns provided rapid-fire capability at extremely close range, making them ideal for urban combat scenarios where enemies might be encountered around corners or in confined spaces. Whilst ineffective against heavily armoured targets, they were devastating against infantry and lightly protected vehicles.
2-tube missile pods
The mobile suit mounted two 2-tube missile pods in its torso. These provided additional ranged firepower to supplement the energy gun, allowing the Galluss-J to engage multiple targets or provide suppressive fire during urban operations.
Beam saber
The Galluss-J carried a single beam saber for melee combat. The beam saber is a small device held in the mobile suit’s hands when deployed and is powered by a rechargeable energy capacitor. The beam saber used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of a blade, enabling it to cut through most materials.

Variants
AMX-101K Galluss-K
Neo Zeon also developed an artillery variant, the AMX-101K Galluss-K. This variant was equipped with additional long-range weaponry to provide fire support rather than close combat capability.
AMX-101E Schuzrum-Galluss
Soon after, Neo Zeon fielded another customized variant, the AMX-101E Schuzrum-Galluss, in an attack on Londo Bell in space. This variant featured modifications for space combat operations.
Behind the scenes
Yutaka Izubuchi (principal design), Hideo Okamoto (cleanup) were the original mechanical designers. Izubuchi’s designs for the enemy mobile suits were being refined and completed. The final cleanup was done mainly by Shindosha’s Mika Akitaka and Hideo Okamoto.
Izubuchi himself stepped in to draw a model sheet for the head of the Galluss-J. The design was part of a comprehensive redesign effort for Neo Zeon mobile suits in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.
Gunpla
Bandai announced the 1/144 HGUC AMX-101 Galluss-J for release in August 2025, marking the first High Grade kit of this mobile suit.
