ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam

The ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam was a nuclear-powered prototype mobile suit developed by ZAFT during the First Alliance-PLANT War in Cosmic Era 71. The Providence Gundam was piloted by Rau Le Creuset in the final battle of the war, serving as his ultimate mobile suit. The mobile suit’s most distinctive feature was its DRAGOON (Disconnected Rapid Armament Group Overlook Operation Network) remote weapon system, which consisted of 43 remote-controlled weapons that provided overwhelming firepower and multi-directional attack capabilities.

Model Code Explanation: The “ZGMF” designation indicated a ZAFT General-purpose Maneuver Fighter mobile suit, whilst “X” denoted an experimental prototype. The “13A” model number indicated it was part of ZAFT’s advanced mobile suit development programme, specifically designed for commanders.

History

The Providence Gundam was developed by ZAFT as part of their advanced mobile suit programme, designed to incorporate nuclear power plants after the Neutron Jammer Canceller technology was successfully developed. The mobile suit was specifically designed for commanders and incorporated the revolutionary DRAGOON system, which allowed for remote-controlled weapons that could attack from multiple directions simultaneously.

The Providence Gundam was assigned to Rau Le Creuset, a ZAFT commander who had previously piloted the ZGMF-515 CGUE. Rau’s nihilistic philosophy and tactical abilities made him an ideal pilot for the Providence, which required exceptional spatial awareness and multi-tasking abilities to effectively control its 43 DRAGOON units.

The Providence Gundam made its debut in the final battle of the First Alliance-PLANT War, where Rau engaged Kira Yamato in the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and Athrun Zala in the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. The Providence’s overwhelming firepower and Rau’s piloting abilities made it nearly unstoppable, forcing Kira and Athrun to work together to overcome the mobile suit’s advantages.

Design

The Providence Gundam’s design emphasised overwhelming firepower through its DRAGOON system and nuclear power plant. The mobile suit featured Phase Shift Armor like other advanced mobile suits, providing excellent protection against physical attacks. The Providence’s distinctive appearance included large wing-like structures that housed its DRAGOON units.

The mobile suit’s nuclear reactor eliminated the energy limitations that plagued battery-powered mobile suits, allowing for extended combat operations and the use of powerful weapons without concern for energy consumption. This capability was essential for the DRAGOON system, which required significant power to operate all 43 remote weapons simultaneously.

DRAGOON System

The Providence Gundam’s most distinctive feature was its DRAGOON system, which consisted of 43 remote-controlled weapons that could operate independently of the mobile suit. The DRAGOON units were divided into three groups:

  • 11 large DRAGOON units mounted on the mobile suit’s backpack
  • 8 medium DRAGOON units mounted on the mobile suit’s shoulders
  • 24 small DRAGOON units mounted on the mobile suit’s legs

The DRAGOON system allowed the Providence to attack from multiple directions simultaneously, creating a nearly impenetrable field of fire that could overwhelm even the most skilled pilots. The system required exceptional spatial awareness and multi-tasking abilities from the pilot, as each DRAGOON unit needed to be controlled independently.

The DRAGOON system’s effectiveness was demonstrated in the final battle, where Rau used it to engage multiple targets simultaneously and create complex attack patterns that were difficult to defend against. However, the system’s complexity also made it vulnerable to coordinated attacks, as demonstrated when Kira and Athrun worked together to destroy the DRAGOON units systematically.

Armaments

DRAGOON System

The Providence Gundam’s primary weapon system consisted of 43 DRAGOON remote-controlled weapons:

  • 11 large DRAGOON units mounted on the backpack, each equipped with beam cannons
  • 8 medium DRAGOON units mounted on the shoulders, each equipped with beam cannons
  • 24 small DRAGOON units mounted on the legs, each equipped with beam cannons

The DRAGOON units could operate independently, allowing the Providence to attack from multiple directions simultaneously and create complex attack patterns that were difficult to defend against.

MA-M221 “Judicium” Beam Rifle

The Providence Gundam was equipped with a high-powered beam rifle designed for long-range combat. The rifle’s power output was enhanced by the mobile suit’s nuclear reactor, allowing for sustained fire without concern for energy depletion.

MA-MV05 “Composite Armed Shield System” Shield

The Providence Gundam’s shield was equipped with beam cannons, allowing it to serve as both a defensive and offensive weapon. The shield’s design incorporated the mobile suit’s nuclear power plant, enabling powerful beam attacks.

Beam Sabres

The Providence Gundam was equipped with two beam sabres for close combat. The sabres were stored on the mobile suit’s hips and could be deployed quickly when needed.

MMI-GAU2 “Picus” 76mm CIWS

The Providence Gundam was equipped with two head-mounted CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) guns for anti-missile defence and close-range combat. These weapons were effective against small targets and incoming projectiles.

Known pilots

Rau Le Creuset

Rau Le Creuset was the Providence Gundam’s primary and only known pilot. Rau’s exceptional piloting abilities and spatial awareness made him an ideal pilot for the mobile suit’s complex DRAGOON system. His nihilistic philosophy and tactical thinking allowed him to use the Providence’s overwhelming firepower effectively, making him nearly unstoppable in combat.

Rau piloted the Providence Gundam in the final battle of the First Alliance-PLANT War, where he engaged Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala simultaneously. Despite the Providence’s overwhelming advantages, Rau was ultimately defeated when Kira and Athrun worked together to systematically destroy the DRAGOON units and disable the mobile suit.

The Providence Gundam was part of ZAFT’s advanced mobile suit development programme, which also produced the Freedom Gundam and Justice Gundam. These three mobile suits represented the pinnacle of ZAFT’s mobile suit technology, incorporating nuclear power plants and advanced weapon systems.

The DRAGOON system used in the Providence Gundam would later be refined and used in other mobile suits in subsequent series.
