The YAMS-132 Rozen Zulu was a prototype anti-Newtype mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics for the Neo Zeon remnant group the Sleeves.

The “Y” in the model code indicated an anti-Newtype system, the “AMS” designated it as an advanced mobile suit, and the “132” denoted its development number. The name “Rozen Zulu” combined the German word “Rozen” (rose) with “Zulu,” reflecting both its rose-themed design elements and Zeon heritage.

History

The YAMS-132 Rozen Zulu was based on the concept of the experimental mobile suit AMX-103 Hamma Hamma, and was designed as a psycommu warfare mobile suit for non-Newtype pilots. The mobile suit was developed specifically to serve as a counter against Banagher Links’ RX-0 Unicorn Gundam.

The Rozen Zulu was actually a heavily modified AMS-129 Geara Zulu (Angelo Sauper Use) using spare parts of the MSN-06S Sinanju. As a result, the suit had psychoframe installed around the cockpit but was not intended for Newtype use. Anaheim Electronics constructed the mobile suit for the Sleeves, incorporating advanced anti-Newtype systems.

Near the end of the Laplace Incident of UC 0096, a temporary alliance between Full Frontal’s Neo Zeon and the Londo Bell ship Nahel Argama fell apart, resulting in a mobile suit battle in the ship’s hangar. The Rozen Zulu lost part of its right arm while escaping from the ship, and the arm was replaced with a wired shield unit that mounted a 3-barrel mega particle cannon and an I-field generator. Angelo used his psycho-jammers to briefly contain Banagher, but he eventually lost to the Unicorn Gundam.

Design

Like the Hamma Hamma, both of the Rozen Zulu’s arms contained wire-guided weapons that functioned as INCOMs, ending in claws that could be used as a melee weapon. The mobile suit featured a distinctive asymmetrical design with ornate decorations that gave it an elegant yet menacing appearance.

The mobile suit was equipped with a hybrid psychoframe cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat. The suit was incorporated with a quasi-psycommu system so that normal pilots could control the arm-mounted INCOMs effectively. Despite having psychoframe components, the Rozen Zulu was not designed for Newtype pilots.

The Rozen Zulu had an ultracompact Minovsky fusion reactor that generated an output of 4,950 kW. It had rocket thrusters that generated 257,200 kg of total thrust. The mobile suit’s sensors had a detection range of 18,200 metres.

Armaments

The Rozen Zulu’s standard weapons were INCOM claws for ranged and melee combat, vulcan guns for close-range defence, and psycho jammers for disrupting enemy psycommu systems.

Vulcan guns

Six fire-linked gatling vulcan guns were mounted on either side of the Rozen Zulu’s head. These rapid-fire weapons were used primarily against light-armoured support units and served as missile defence. Sustained fire from the guns could damage mobile suits and were often used in close-distance combat.

INCOM claws

Mounted in the forearms, the pair of wire-guided devices was the main weaponry of the Rozen Zulu and each was equipped with triple mega particle cannons of adjustable output as well as three claws that could be used to pierce enemy units. Controlled by the quasi-psycommu system, each INCOM also had three relay INCOMs, thinner disc-shaped objects, that were used to help the main INCOM change direction during attacks.

The INCOM claws combined the functions of ranged beam weapons and melee weapons in a single system. When deployed as remote weapons, they could attack from multiple angles whilst remaining connected to the main body via wire guidance. When used in close combat, the claws could physically grasp and damage enemy mobile suits.

Psycho jammers

The mobile suit was equipped with petal-shaped remote control devices, the “psycho jammer”, which disrupted the connection and function of enemy psycommu-guided weapons and systems. The psycho jammers were stored in the two back containers and resembled rose buds that could expand to jam psychowaves. They functioned similarly to bits/funnels, except they were not equipped with offensive weaponry. However, they could generate an octahedral psycho-field around enemy units for capture/jamming purposes much like the Nu Gundam’s fin funnel barrier. It was particularly effective against the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, a full-psychoframe machine, and was used to inhibit the activation of its NT-D System.

Mega particle shield

For defensive purposes, it carried a shield which had three built in mega particle cannons and an I-field generator. The shield provided both protection from enemy attacks and additional firepower through its integrated beam cannons. The I-field generator could deflect beam attacks, making the shield particularly effective against energy-based weapons.

Wired shield unit

This shield was later replaced by the wired shield unit that was mounted on the right arm to replace the destroyed arm-mounted INCOM. The wired shield unit featured a 3-barrel mega particle cannon and an I-field generator. This replacement unit restored some of the Rozen Zulu’s lost firepower after battle damage.

Behind the scenes

Hajime Katoki was the original mechanical designer. The anime version was based on the YAMS-132 Rozen Zulu from the Gundam Unicorn novels.

The name “Rozen” comes from the German word for rose, reflecting the mobile suit’s rose-themed design elements, particularly the petal-shaped psycho jammers that resembled rose buds when deployed.
