Union Space Elevator
Union's space elevator located in South America, one of three orbital elevators.
The Union Space Elevator (ユニオン軌道エレベーター, Yunion Kidō Erebētā) was one of three orbital elevators constructed in the Anno Domini era, located in Union territory in South America. Along with the AEU and Human Reform League space elevators, it represented the new world order’s technological achievements and served as a critical infrastructure for space transportation and solar power generation.
Construction and design
The Union Space Elevator was constructed as part of the orbital elevator project that revolutionised humanity’s access to space. Built between AD 2281 and 2307, the elevator extended from Earth’s surface to a geostationary orbital station, providing a means of transporting people and materials to space without the need for traditional rocket launches.
The elevator consisted of a cable anchored to Earth and extending to a space station in geostationary orbit. The structure enabled efficient transportation between Earth and space, reducing the cost and environmental impact of space travel whilst providing a means of transmitting solar power from orbital solar arrays to Earth.
Strategic importance
The Union Space Elevator held significant strategic importance for the Union power bloc. As one of only three orbital elevators in the world, it represented Union’s technological and economic superiority. Control of the elevator gave the Union significant influence over space access and energy distribution.
The elevator served as a symbol of Union power and a demonstration of the bloc’s commitment to technological advancement. Its presence reinforced the Union’s position as one of the world’s three major power blocs, alongside the AEU and Human Reform League.
Solar power generation
A primary function of the Union Space Elevator was the transmission of solar power from orbital solar arrays to Earth. The elevator’s cable served as a conduit for transmitting energy collected in space, providing a clean and sustainable power source for Union territories.
The solar power generation capabilities of the elevator contributed to the world’s transition away from fossil fuels, addressing the energy crisis that had plagued humanity in earlier periods. The elevator’s role in energy distribution made it a critical piece of infrastructure for the Union’s economy and society.
Role in conflicts
During the events of Mobile Suit Gundam 00, the Union Space Elevator became a target for Celestial Being interventions and later conflicts. The elevator’s strategic importance made it a focal point for military and political manoeuvring.
The elevator’s location in Union territory meant that it was often at the centre of conflicts involving Union forces. Its importance to the world’s energy infrastructure meant that attacks on or near the elevator could have significant consequences for global stability.
Symbolism
The Union Space Elevator served as a symbol of humanity’s technological achievements and the new world order established in the Anno Domini era. Its construction represented humanity’s ability to overcome the challenges of space travel and energy generation, demonstrating progress toward a more advanced and sustainable civilisation.
The elevator also symbolised the divisions between the world’s power blocs, as each bloc maintained its own elevator and competed for influence and resources. The elevators’ existence highlighted both humanity’s achievements and the ongoing conflicts that characterised the Anno Domini era.
