RX-110 Gabthley

The RX-110 Gabthley was a prototype transformable mobile suit developed by Paptimus Scirocco for the Titans.

The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model and the “X” designated it as an experimental mobile suit. The “110” in the model code denoted it was the one hundred and tenth experimental design in the Federation’s development programme.

History

The transformable mobile armor RX-110 Gabthley was an intended mass production unit conceptually developed by Paptimus Scirocco during the Gryps War. Several test units were fielded in combat, with positive results due to its unique design and high performance.

The Gabthley was first tested by Jerid Messa and Mouar Pharaoh, who piloted it against Paptimus Scirocco in the PMX-000 Messala under his command. After the initial testing, the two units participated in Operation Apollo in pursuit of the Argama.

Jerid and Mouar fought against Kamille Bidan’s MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam, resulting in Mouar’s death and the loss of her Gabthley. With the remaining Gabthley heavily damaged, Jerid left space for Titan’s Kilimanjaro Base in East Africa.

Even though the Gabthley was a very promising high-performance unit, the design was deemed too complicated and costly for mass production, and its development was dropped after the test stage.

Design

In mobile armor mode, the Gabthley was one of the fastest units in the field, capable of reaching speeds of Mach 25.0. The unique movable frame allowed the mobile suit mode’s feet to become claws in mobile armor mode, giving the mobile armor the ability to perform limited melee and grappling attacks that were unprecedented among transformable mobile weapons.

The Gabthley featured an innovative transformation system that made efficient use of its internal space. The mobile suit’s arms could fold back along the body, while the legs extended to form the rear portion of the mobile armor configuration. This design enabled the Gabthley to maintain structural integrity whilst achieving exceptional speed in its transformed state.

The mobile suit featured shoulder-mounted mega particle cannons that provided flexible fire angles, allowing the Gabthley to engage multiple targets effectively. This armament configuration made the Gabthley highly effective in both close- and long-range combat scenarios.

Armaments

The Gabthley’s standard weapons were shoulder-mounted mega particle cannons for ranged attacks and four beam sabers for melee combat.

Mega particle cannons

A pair of mega particle cannons were mounted in the Gabthley’s shoulders, each with a power rating of 4.2 MW. These weapons provided the mobile suit with substantial long-range firepower and could be flexibly positioned to engage targets at various angles. The shoulder mounting allowed for a wider field of fire than traditional torso-mounted weapons.

Beam sabers

The Gabthley carried four beam sabers with a power rating of 0.55 MW each. These were stored in recharge racks in the forearms and hand-carried when in use. The multiple beam sabers provided exceptional close-range combat capabilities, allowing the Gabthley to engage multiple opponents simultaneously or maintain combat effectiveness even if some weapons were damaged.

Feyadeen beam rifle/saber

The mobile suit’s primary handheld weapon was the powerful Feyadeen beam rifle/saber with a power rating of 6.6 MW. This versatile weapon could function as both a long-range beam rifle and a beam saber for close combat. The Feyadeen rifle was stored on the main body in mobile armor mode and represented one of the most powerful beam weapons of its era. When configured as a beam lance, it could be used for charging attacks in mobile armor mode.

Variants

In addition to the regular test units, the Titans created two variants: the customized RX-110C Gabthley [Hugin] and the Cyber Newtype-use RX-110NT-1 Gabthley [Munin].

Behind the scenes

Kazumi Fujita was the original mechanical designer. The Gabthley shares the same model number with the RX-110 Zorin Soul featured in Gaia Gear.
