RGM-89De Jegan (ECOAS Type/Conroy Use)

The RGM-89De Jegan (ECOAS Type/Conroy Use) was a custom special operations mobile suit used by Conroy Haagensen, the deputy commander of the Earth Federation’s ECOAS special forces unit.

The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model1 and the “GM” indicated that it was a Gundam mass production mobile suit. The “89” in the model code denoted that it was developed from the RGM-89 Jegan, the “D” indicated it was based on the Type D variant, and the “e” suffix stood for ECOAS. The “Conroy Use” designation indicated it was customised for Conroy Haagensen’s personal use.

History

Conroy Haagensen, the second-in-command of the Earth Federation’s special forces unit ECOAS, used a heavily customised variant of the RGM-89De Jegan (ECOAS Type). The unit was similar to the standard model but featured an additional sensor on its visor and armaments that were customised to fit Conroy’s fighting style.

In UC 0096, during the Laplace Incident, Conroy used his custom unit to defend the Londo Bell ship Nahel Argama from attacking Neo Zeon mobile suits. The mobile suit saw extensive action throughout the conflict, with Conroy utilising its diverse weapon loadout to engage various enemy units.

During the final battle against the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong, Conroy’s Jegan participated in the desperate fight, where he used the dagger knife to cut the wires of the Neo Zeong’s wired large funnel bits, demonstrating the versatility of his custom armament package.

Design

Conroy’s unit was based on the standard RGM-89De Jegan (ECOAS Type) but featured numerous customisations to suit his personal combat preferences and fighting style. The most notable external difference was an additional sensor unit mounted on the combat visor, enhancing its reconnaissance capabilities beyond the standard ECOAS Type.

The mobile suit featured enhanced sensor capabilities with a detection range of 24,800 metres, representing a significant improvement over the standard ECOAS Type’s 20,160-metre range. This enhancement made Conroy’s unit particularly effective for reconnaissance and target acquisition missions.

The mobile suit retained the same basic specifications as the standard ECOAS Type, with an ultracompact Minovsky fusion reactor generating 1,870 kW of output and propulsion system providing 62,000 kg of total thrust.

Armaments

Conroy’s unit featured a heavily customised armament package that reflected his preference for close-quarters combat and versatility. The suit’s armaments were customised to fit Conroy’s fighting style and included both standard and unique weapons.

Enhanced combat visor

Conroy’s unit featured an upgraded combat visor with an additional sensor unit, providing superior target acquisition and battlefield awareness compared to the standard ECOAS Type. The enhanced visor allowed for improved accuracy when using the handgun and other precision weapons.

Beam saber

Besides the standard beam saber stored in the right side armour, Conroy’s Jegan featured the same adjustable output system as other Jegan variants. The beam saber could emit either a flat beam blade for slashing or a slim beam blade with high penetration ability.

Box beam saber

Conroy’s Jegan had an additional beam saber integrated into a box-shaped device mounted on its right forearm for quick deployment. This provided Conroy with immediate access to a melee weapon without having to draw the standard beam saber from its storage rack, giving him a tactical advantage in close combat situations.

Fire nut grenades

The Jegan (ECOAS Type/Conroy Use) had a different grenade rack from that of the standard unit, and it held a special kind of grenade known as “Fire Nut”. Originally featured on the RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type, it could be hand-thrown like a regular grenade, and upon impact with the target, would engulf it in flames.

Beam rifle

Conroy’s unit could be equipped with different types of beam rifles depending on mission requirements. One option was the same beam rifle used by the standard ECOAS Type, whilst another was a beam rifle previously used by the RGM-86R GM III, powered by a rechargeable energy cap and rated at 2.8 MW output.

Handgun

A close-range weapon used by Conroy’s Jegan (ECOAS Type), it was a shorter version of the Jegan’s beam rifle but could still penetrate enemy mobile suit armour. It could be fired in rapid-fire mode and was typically used when the special visor was activated for better accuracy. The handgun was stored on the Jegan’s lower left leg hardpoint when not in use.

Dagger knife

Conroy’s unit was equipped with a physical blade stored in a sheath located on the left shoulder. It was stored with its handle facing downwards to facilitate drawing the weapon during close combat. The dagger knife proved particularly useful during the encounter with the NZ-999 II Neo Zeong, where it was used to cut the wires of the wired large funnel bits.

Behind the scenes

Katoki Hajime was the original mechanical designer for Conroy’s custom Jegan, as part of his work on the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series. The design emphasised Conroy’s role as a veteran special forces operator through the diverse and practical weapon loadout.

The custom unit demonstrated the flexibility of the Jegan platform and the Earth Federation’s willingness to support ace pilots with personalised equipment packages suited to their individual combat styles.
