OZ-09MMS Pisces
Amphibious mobile suit with submarine mode and torpedoes.
The OZ-09MMS Pisces was one of two mass-produced transformable aquatic mobile suits developed by OZ in After Colony 195. Like the OZ-08MMS Cancer, the Pisces could switch between two modes—submarine mode for high-speed underwater movement and mobile suit mode with stubby legs that was more humanoid than the Cancer’s legless design. The Pisces’ propellers in submarine mode functioned as claws in mobile suit mode, containing small extendable manipulators for delicate operations. Its primary weapons were torpedoes fired from shoulder-mounted launchers, effective for underwater attacks and coastal bombardment when the suit partially surfaced.
Overview
The Pisces represented OZ’s second amphibious mobile suit design alongside the Cancer. Where the Cancer emphasized underwater cruising capability by eliminating legs entirely, the Pisces retained stubby legs, making it more versatile in mobile suit mode. This design philosophy made the Pisces better suited for amphibious operations that required transitioning between underwater and land-based combat.
The mobile suit’s name came from the twelfth sign of the zodiac, meaning “Fish,” reflecting its aquatic specialization. The Pisces’ overall design emphasized this aquatic theme with its streamlined submarine mode and propeller-claw arms.
Armament
Torpedoes
The Pisces’ primary weapons were torpedoes fired from shoulder-mounted torpedo launchers, six in each shoulder for a total of twelve. These torpedoes had the power to destroy submarines in one shot and could also perform surface-to-surface missile attacks when the Pisces surfaced. The high ammunition capacity allowed the Pisces to engage multiple targets before requiring resupply, making it effective for extended patrols and sustained combat operations.
The shoulder mounting allowed the Pisces to fire torpedoes in both submarine and mobile suit modes. When partially surfaced in mobile suit mode, the Pisces could bombard coastal targets, providing naval artillery support for amphibious assaults.
Depth charges
After sneaking up to enemy ships unnoticed, the Pisces could attach multiple depth charges to deal serious damage. This capability made the Pisces dangerous to surface vessels, particularly when operating in groups that could coordinate simultaneous attacks on enemy fleets. The stealth approach required for depth charge deployment showcased the Pisces’ excellent underwater manoeuvrability.
Special equipment
Propeller claws
The Pisces’ arms featured propellers that provided propulsion in submarine mode. When transformed to mobile suit mode, these propellers functioned as claws that could grip objects or engage in close combat. Small extendable manipulators within the claws allowed delicate operations, such as attaching depth charges to enemy ships or retrieving objects from the ocean floor.
Searchlights
A searchlight was mounted on each shoulder for underwater search operations. These provided illumination in the dark ocean depths, essential for locating targets, navigating underwater terrain, or conducting search-and-rescue operations for downed pilots or sunken equipment.
Operational history
The Pisces was used throughout AC 195 by OZ in various aquatic missions. One such operation involved searching for the Wing Gundam that had been abandoned on the ocean floor after Heero Yuy’s battle with Zechs Merquise. However, the two Pisces and one Cancer that found the Gundam were ambushed and destroyed by Duo Maxwell’s Gundam Deathscythe.
Later, Pisces units—usually in conjunction with Cancers—were used in multiple battles that took place in the ocean, on the surface, or in coastal regions. Two Pisces were piloted by Lucrezia Noin and Sally Po to prevent OZ from acquiring the Wing Gundam. During this mission, they destroyed six Cancers and their submarine carrier whilst successfully retrieving the Gundam.
Pisces units were last seen when the Romefeller Foundation conquered the Sanc Kingdom, participating in the amphibious assault that ended the kingdom’s resistance.
