NZ-222 Psycho Doga
Prototype Newtype-use mobile armor developed by Anaheim Electronics.
NZ-222 Psycho Doga
The NZ-222 Psycho Doga was a prototype Newtype-use mobile armor developed by Anaheim Electronics that served as the prototype for the NZ-333 α Azieru. Built parallel to the MSN-03 Jagd Doga, the Psycho Doga was much smaller than the α Azieru but because the size of the psycommu system could not be reduced in time, the body was enlarged to that of a mobile armor.
The “NZ” in the model code indicated it was developed by Neo Zeon, and the “222” denoted that it was the 222nd design in the series. This unit should not be confused with the MSN-03-2 Psycho Doga, which shares a similar name but is a different mobile suit from Beltorchika’s Children.
History
The NZ-222 Psycho Doga was built by Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon movement during UC 0093 and served as a prototype for the later Alpha Azieru. The mobile armor was designed to test technologies and systems that would later be incorporated into the larger α Azieru.
Due to the limitations in miniaturising the psycommu system during the development period, the Psycho Doga required a mobile armor-sized frame to accommodate all the necessary equipment. This made it significantly larger than typical mobile suits of the era.
Design
The NZ-222 Psycho Doga was designed as a mobile armor rather than a mobile suit due to the space requirements of its advanced psycommu system. The mobile armor featured a distinctive design with large shoulder binders and an elongated body configuration optimised for accommodating the extensive psycommu equipment.
Unlike the later α Azieru, the Psycho Doga was equipped with an I-field barrier generator, providing better protection against beam weapon fire. This defensive system could deflect or absorb incoming beam attacks, giving the mobile armor significant survivability advantages.
The cockpit was located in the head unit and featured a panoramic monitor and linear seat configuration. The psycommu system allowed Newtype pilots to control the mobile armor’s remote weapons through mental commands.
Two booster units were mounted on the main body to provide additional propulsion and maneuverability despite the mobile armor’s large size. These boosters enabled the Psycho Doga to maintain combat effectiveness in space operations.
Armaments
The Psycho Doga was only armed with six funnels and two wired psycommu mega arms, each mounting a single beam gun. This relatively limited armament configuration was compensated by the mobile armor’s advanced all-range attack capabilities.
Wired psycommu mega arms
Mounted at the ends of the Psycho Doga’s shoulder armor were two wire-guided mega arm units, with each unit being armed with a single beam gun. When launched, the mega arm cannons allowed the Psycho Doga to attack a target from multiple angles simultaneously, making dodging very difficult.
Although they were also controlled by the psycommu system like the large funnels, they lacked the range of the funnels and were used more as mid-to-short range weapons. The wire-guided nature provided a reliable connection that could not be jammed by Minovsky particle interference.
Funnels
The Psycho Doga was equipped with 6 funnels stored in recharge racks on the rear skirt armor. They were equipped with built-in generators and guided by the psycommu system, these remote weapons were capable of conducting all range attacks from great distances without the need for guiding wires and without interference from Minovsky particles.
With their all range attack capability, the Psycho Doga could attack multiple opponents from multiple angles, an attack that would destroy all but the most skilled pilots in the most advanced machines. They were also ideal for attacking nuclear missiles as their great operation range allowed the Psycho Doga to destroy a nuclear missile outside of the explosion radius.
Known pilots
No specific pilots are recorded for the NZ-222 Psycho Doga, as it remained primarily a prototype and test unit.
Behind the scenes
The NZ-222 Psycho Doga was part of the original Char’s Counterattack Mobile Suit Variations (CCA-MSV) series, representing Neo Zeon’s experimental mobile armor development efforts during UC 0093.
This mobile armor should not be confused with the MSN-03-2 Psycho Doga from Beltorchika’s Children, which despite sharing a similar name, is a completely different mobile suit with different specifications and a higher canonical standing due to its appearance in official manga media.
As a design from the MSV line, it has a lower canonical status compared to mecha that appear in animated works or official manga adaptations.
