Munzo Parliament
Legislative chamber of Side 3's Republic of Munzo prior to the Zabi coup.
The Munzo Parliament Building (ムンゾ議会議事堂, Munzo Gikai Gijidō) housed the legislature of Side 3’s Republic of Munzo in the years before the Zabi family seized power. Featured prominently in Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin, it symbolised Zeon Zum Deikun’s vision of a democratic spacenoid polity.
Architecture
Designed with sweeping glass atriums and gravity-neutral chambers, the building emphasised openness and accessibility. A central rotunda hosted debates, while upper galleries allowed citizens to observe proceedings—an intentional contrast to the militaristic facilities that later defined the Principality of Zeon.
Political role
The debate chamber hosted speeches by Zeon Zum Deikun advocating spacenoid independence and the philosophy of Contolism, while council offices provided workspace for moderate factions such as the Zeon Reform Movement. An emergency session hall later became infamous as the site where Degwin Sodo Zabi consolidated power after Deikun’s death.
Transformation under the Zabis
Following the coup, the Zabi regime retained the building but surrounded it with militarised checkpoints. Public galleries were closed, and the rotunda was converted into a ceremonial hall for speeches praising the nascent Principality, highlighting the erosion of democratic ideals within Side 3.
Legacy
The building’s fate reflects the Universal Century’s recurring theme of revolutionary aspirations being co-opted by authoritarian rule. Its depiction in The Origin underscores the personal stakes of Casval and Artesia’s escape and provides a backdrop for the ideological struggle within Zeon.
Behind the scenes
The parliament complex is a key setting in the Blue-Eyed Casval chapter of Yasuhiko Yoshikazu’s manga and the corresponding OVA, illustrating the broader political canvas behind Char Aznable’s origin story.
Appearances
Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin features the parliament building throughout the Blue-Eyed Casval arc and related OVA episodes.
