Meer Campbell
Coordinator who impersonated Lacus Clyne at Durandal's request to bolster his political support.
Meer Campbell (ミーア・キャンベル, Mīa Kyanberu) was a Coordinator in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny who impersonated the idol Lacus Clyne at the request of Gilbert Durandal. A devoted fan of Lacus with a naturally similar voice, Meer underwent cosmetic surgery to resemble Lacus and performed as her in public to build support for Durandal’s policies and the Destiny Plan. She believed in Durandal’s ideals and willingly took part in the deception, hoping to be loved by the public. She was killed when the Archangel attacked the concert venue where she was performing.
Biography
Recruitment by Durandal
Durandal contacted Meer because of her vocal resemblance to Lacus and her fan devotion. He asked her to pose as Lacus to strengthen his political position and rally PLANT citizens behind his vision. Meer agreed and had surgery to make her face match Lacus’s; she dyed her hair pink and wore blue contact lenses (her natural appearance was grey hair and brown eyes).
Public role
Meer performed more upbeat, energetic versions of Lacus’s songs and wore more revealing stage outfits than the original. She appeared at rallies and concerts to promote Durandal’s agenda. Some characters could tell her apart from the real Lacus by details such as hairclips and mannerisms, but to the public she was “Lacus” and helped consolidate support for the Chairman.
Death
When the Archangel and its allies moved against Durandal, they attacked the venue where Meer was performing. She was killed in the assault, and her death was used by Durandal’s side to portray the opposition as terrorists.
Personality and traits
Meer was sincere in her belief in Durandal’s ideals and in her desire to be loved as Lacus. She was a tragic figure—a fan who became a tool and died for a role she had chosen but could not control.
Behind the scenes
Meer Campbell was created for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny as a political double and to contrast with the real Lacus Clyne. She and Lacus were both voiced by Rie Tanaka in Japanese.
