Lhasa

Lhasa (ラサ, Rasa) was a city on Earth and the site of the Earth Federation Forces headquarters. In March UC 0093 it was destroyed when Neo Zeon dropped Fifth Luna onto the region during the opening phase of the Second Neo Zeon War, as depicted in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

History

Lhasa served as the Federation’s primary military headquarters on Earth. Char Aznable’s Neo Zeon forces seized the mining asteroid Fifth Luna and used its thermonuclear pulse thrusters to put it on a collision course with Lhasa. Despite Londo Bell’s attempt to intercept the asteroid, Fifth Luna struck the area, destroying the headquarters and dealing a major blow to the Federation’s command structure. The event is often referred to as the Fifth Luna Drop.

Behind the scenes

The use of Lhasa as the Federation HQ and the target of the Fifth Luna drop reflects the film’s use of real-world geography; Lhasa is the capital of Tibet in the real world.
