Flaste Schole

Flaste Schole was the helmsman and second-in-command of the Sleeves freighter Garencieres during the Third Neo Zeon War. Despite his gruff exterior, he was known for his brotherly personality and had the complete trust of his crew.

Biography

Early life

Flaste Schole was born in UC 0069, making him 27 years old during the events of the Laplace Incident in UC 0096. He became an old acquaintance of Suberoa Zinnerman, eventually serving under him as helmsman and second-in-command aboard the Garencieres.

Third Neo Zeon War

In UC 0096, Schole served aboard the Garencieres when it was dispatched to Industrial 7 as part of a covert mission for the Sleeves. The ship, disguised as a civilian freighter operated by Rivacona Cargo, was tasked with meeting representatives of the Vist Foundation to obtain Laplace’s Box.

During the mission, Schole demonstrated his loyalty to Captain Zinnerman and his professional competence as helmsman. When Mineva Lao Zabi, travelling under the alias Audrey Burne, stowed away aboard the Garencieres, Schole supported the captain’s decisions regarding her presence and the mission’s continuation.

As the ship’s second-in-command, Schole played a crucial role in coordinating the crew during the various battles and operations that followed the disastrous meeting at Industrial 7. His experience and steady demeanour helped maintain crew morale during the challenging events of the Laplace Incident.

When the Garencieres later set itself to self-destruct as a decoy whilst the crew transferred to the Nahel Argama, Schole supported this strategic decision and successfully evacuated with the rest of the crew.

Personality & traits

At first glance, Flaste Schole appeared gruff and unapproachable, maintaining a stern demeanour that could intimidate newcomers. However, beneath this exterior lay a personality more akin to that of a big brother figure. His crew trusted him completely, recognising his genuine care for their wellbeing and his reliability in dangerous situations.

Schole was known for speaking candidly about the Earth Federation Forces’ brutality during the One Year War, sharing this perspective with Alfee Zydos from Mobile Suit Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. This background likely influenced his decision to join the anti-Federation forces of the Sleeves.

Skills & abilities

As the helmsman of the Garencieres, Schole demonstrated exceptional piloting skills, successfully navigating the ship through both space and atmospheric operations. His expertise extended to the ship’s atmospheric flight capabilities, allowing it to operate as a transport between Earth and space environments.

His role as second-in-command required strong leadership abilities and tactical awareness. Schole proved capable of supporting Captain Zinnerman in difficult decisions whilst maintaining the crew’s cohesion and effectiveness during combat operations.

Relationships

Suberoa Zinnerman

Schole was an old acquaintance of Captain Suberoa Zinnerman and served as his trusted second-in-command aboard the Garencieres. Their professional relationship was built on mutual respect and understanding, with Schole providing reliable support to the captain’s leadership throughout their missions.

Garencieres crew

Despite his initially intimidating demeanour, Schole enjoyed the complete trust of the Garencieres crew. His big brother-like personality made him a respected figure among the ship’s personnel, who relied on his steady presence during the uncertainties of their anti-Federation operations.

Behind the scenes

Flaste Schole was designed as part of the supporting cast for Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, created by novelist Harutoshi Fukui. His character design was handled by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko for the animated adaptation.

In the Japanese version, Schole was voiced by Rikiya Koyama, who also voiced Kurt Roswell in Mobile Suit Gundam: Spirits of Zeon Dual Stars of Carnage. The English dub featured both Patrick Seitz and Sean Schemmel voicing the character across different episodes.

The character’s name “Schole” may derive from the Greek word “σχολή” (scholē), meaning leisure or that which is dedicated to learning, which contrasts with his active military role aboard the Garencieres.
