Best Gundam series for beginners in 2025

With 40+ Gundam series spanning 45 years, where do you start? The answer depends on what you want: modern animation, self-contained stories, or the full Universal Century experience. Here are the best entry points for 2025.

#1: Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023)

Best for: Modern anime fans and complete newcomers.

The most recent TV series, with strong production values and a school setting that eases you in. The story is self-contained—no prior Gundam knowledge needed—and the cast is diverse and memorable. At 24 episodes it’s a manageable commitment and widely available on streaming. If you want something that feels current and accessible, start here.

#2: Gundam 00 (2007–2009)

Best for: Fans of character-driven drama and clear anti-war themes.

Gundam 00 is set in its own timeline (Anno Domini) and holds up well in HD. The international cast and moral stakes make it easy to follow, and the 50 episodes plus movie tell a complete story. It’s often the series that hooks people who like political intrigue and character growth over pure spectacle.

#3: Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015–2017)

Best for: Viewers who like gritty drama (e.g. Attack on Titan).

Set in the standalone Post-Disaster timeline, IBO is brutal and grounded. The child soldiers of Tekkadan drive a dark but compelling narrative across 50 episodes. It has a strong Western following and shows how varied Gundam can be—no beam-spam heroics, just cost and consequence.

#4: Gundam Wing (1995–1996)

Best for: 90s anime fans and anyone who loves political thrillers.

Gundam Wing was many Western fans’ first Gundam thanks to Toonami. Five pilots, five Gundams, and a web of factions and conspiracies. The 49-episode TV run plus Endless Waltz form a complete, standalone story in the After Colony timeline. We’ve got full coverage of Wing on MechaBay—characters, mecha, and events—so you can dive deep once you’re hooked.

#5: Gundam Unicorn (2010–2014)

Best for: Anyone who wants Universal Century but is put off by 1979 animation.

Gundam Unicorn is the modern gateway to the UC timeline. Seven OVA episodes with spectacular animation and a story that works on its own whilst rewarding knowledge of Mobile Suit Gundam and Char’s Counterattack. If you want to understand why fans care about the Universal Century without starting in 1979, Unicorn is the place.

#6: Gundam SEED (2002–2003)

Best for: Fans of romantic subplots and character drama.

Gundam SEED revived Gundam for the 2000s and simplified UC-style themes for a new audience. It’s set in the standalone Cosmic Era, with a strong focus on relationships and moral choices. Huge in Asia and a gateway for many; 50 episodes plus sequels if you want more.

#7: Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) — compilation films

Best for: Anyone who wants the full UC experience but is short on time.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam in three films instead of 43 episodes. Dated visuals, timeless story—you get the One Year War, Amuro, Char, and the foundation everything else builds on. Ideal if you’re committed to UC but want the fastest path in.

What not to start with

  • Victory Gundam — Too dark and assumes UC familiarity.
  • Zeta Gundam — Direct sequel to MSG; watch the original first.
  • Turn A Gundam — Best appreciated once you know the franchise.
  • Build Fighters — Aimed at existing fans, not first-timers.

After your first series

Quick decision guide

  • Want modern production? → Witch from Mercury or Iron-Blooded Orphans
  • Want a self-contained story? → 00, Wing, or IBO
  • Want to start UC properly? → MSG films or Unicorn, then MSG
  • Short on time? → Unicorn (7 episodes) or Thunderbolt (8 episodes)
  • Want the classic? → Mobile Suit Gundam compilation films

There’s no single “correct” first series—Gundam is designed so different shows work as entry points. Start with whatever matches your taste and time; you can always go back.
