The 10 best Gundam pilots, ranked
Ranking Gundam's greatest pilots by skill, accomplishments, and growth
Who are the best Gundam pilots? This ranking weighs combat skill and effectiveness (40%), notable accomplishments (30%), character growth (20%), and lasting impact (10%). It’s not a power-level list—it’s about who got results, who grew, and who left a mark on the franchise. Expect debate; that’s the point.
#10: Uso Ewin (Victory Gundam)
The youngest Gundam protagonist (13) and one of the deadliest. Uso survived the Zanscare War—among the most brutal conflicts in UC—with a sky-high confirmed kill count. His skill came from necessity and instinct, not formal training. He’s here for sheer survival and effectiveness under impossible conditions.
#9: Judau Ashta (ZZ Gundam)
Tomino has called Judau the strongest Newtype of the era. He defeated Haman Karn, led the ZZ Gundam through the First Neo Zeon War, and is one of the few UC protagonists to get something like a happy ending. Raw talent over training; Newtype power at its peak in the Gryps/ZZ era.
#8: Setsuna F. Seiei (Gundam 00)
Setsuna became the first true Innovator—human evolution in the 00 timeline. He took on armies alone, maintained a near-perfect record, and grew from child soldier to something beyond. His accomplishments and growth both count; 00’s ending puts him at the top of his timeline’s power curve.
#7: Mikazuki Augus (Iron-Blooded Orphans)
The “Demon of Tekkadan” was undefeated in single combat. Fused with his Gundam via the Alaya-Vijnana system, he sacrificed his body for effectiveness. IBO’s grounded tone makes his record all the more impressive—no Newtype magic, just brutal consistency.
#6: Heero Yuy (Gundam Wing)
The “Perfect Soldier” trained from childhood. Heero mastered the ZERO System, survived suicidal missions repeatedly, and coldly got the job done. Gundam Wing runs on his efficiency; his skill is programmatic, relentless, and undeniable.
#5: Kira Yamato (Gundam SEED)
The Ultimate Coordinator—genetically optimised—and the pilot who could disable entire forces without killing. Surviving two wars without a true defeat, Kira represents natural talent plus enhancement. Love him or find him overcentralising, his in-universe record is staggering.
#4: Banagher Links (Gundam Unicorn)
Banagher awakened the Unicorn Gundam, stopped a colony laser, and countered a second Axis Shock. His Newtype resonance connected him to Laplace’s Box and the possibility of understanding. Potential over experience; Unicorn is his coming-of-age as much as a war story.
#3: Kamille Bidan (Zeta Gundam)
The strongest Newtype of the Gryps Conflict. Kamille defeated Paptimus Scirocco and mastered the Zeta Gundam’s Bio-Sensor. The cost was catastrophic—mental breakdown, loss of self—which only underscores how far his power went. Skill and tragedy are inseparable in his case.
#2: Char Aznable (Universal Century)
The Red Comet. Char fought across three wars, commanded loyalty and fear, and nearly dropped Axis on Earth. Genius tactician, ace pilot, and ideological driver of the UC. He’s #2 because his arc is shared with Amuro; the other pilot in the franchise’s defining rivalry had the more complete growth story.
#1: Amuro Ray (Universal Century)
The original Gundam pilot. Amuro evolved from reluctant civilian to legendary ace across 14 years. He defeated Char at A Baoa Qu and again at Axis; the Axis Shock was his and Char’s will made manifest. His growth—from trauma to responsibility to transcendence—is the template every other pilot is measured against. That’s why he’s #1.
Honourable mentions
Domon Kasshu (G Gundam) — Martial artist first, “pilot” second; hard to compare. Lockon Stratos (00) — Tactical genius and sniper; overshadowed by Setsuna’s evolution. Garrod Ran (X) — Underrated; held his own in a broken world. Shiro Amada (08th MS Team) — Ground-war specialist; different kind of ace.
