TOLRO-800 "Torohachi"

The TOLRO-800 “Torohachi” was a civilian petite mobile suit produced by Tolro Company for work in zero-gravity environments.

The model designation “TOLRO-800” indicated it was manufactured by Tolro Company, with “800” being the model number. “Torohachi” was a widely-accepted nickname for the unit.

History

The TOLRO-800 was developed by Tolro Company as the latest model petite mobile suit as of UC 0096. It was designed as a single-seater work model for operations in zero-gravity environments that were too small for a standard mobile suit yet too large for workers in space suits.

In April UC 0096, civilian student Banagher Links was using a TOLRO-800 for a part-time job clearing space debris while studying in the space colony Industrial 7. When Banagher sensed that a girl named Audrey Byrne was in mortal danger during a terrorist incident, he seized one of the machines that was refuelling in a hangar.

Banagher used the Torohachi to rescue Audrey Byrne who was falling inside the space colony Industrial 7. Unknown to Banagher at the time, “Audrey Byrne” was the Zeon princess Mineva Lao Zabi, and his rescue set in motion the events that were later known as the Laplace Incident. When he saved Audrey, the Torohachi ran out of fuel. Banagher, Audrey and Haro crash-landed in the colony’s civilian area.

Design

The TOLRO-800 was an unarmed petite mobile suit designed for work in zero-gravity environments that was too small for a standard mobile suit yet was too large for workers in space suits. The Torohachi was similar to other mobile workers like the Med in that it used a canopy cockpit rather than an enclosed one with cameras.

The mobile suit stood 3.0 metres in overall height, making it significantly smaller than combat mobile suits. The Torohachi could be used in both low gravity environments in space, or within a space colony. It was powered by an ultracompact energy battery rather than a fusion reactor, reflecting its civilian and industrial purpose.

The Torohachi featured a distinctive design with articulated arms ending in manipulator claws for handling debris and materials. The unit had shoulder joints that could swing forward, arm units that could swivel on ball-and-socket joints, and arm pistons that could extend or retract. The elbow joints could bend up to 90 degrees, and the claws could be opened or closed for gripping operations.

The legs were connected to the waist via ball-and-socket joints, allowing them to swivel back and forth. The “foot” treads could tilt to a limited extent for manoeuvrability in various orientations. The cockpit hatch could be opened or closed, and featured clear parts for visibility during operations.

Armaments

The TOLRO-800 was completely unarmed, as befitting its civilian industrial role. It carried no weapons systems, instead focusing entirely on work capabilities through its manipulator arms and mobility systems.

Behind the scenes

Katoki Hajime was the original mechanical designer. The TOLRO-800 was created specifically for Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn to represent the kind of civilian industrial mobile suits that would exist in the Universal Century timeline.

The design represented an evolution of the mobile worker concept first introduced in earlier Gundam series, showing how mobile suit technology had been adapted for peaceful civilian purposes by UC 0096.

Gunpla

The High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) TOLRO-800 “Torohachi” was released in 2023, as an exclusive for The Gundam Base. The kit featured opening and closing cockpit hatches, articulated shoulder joints, telescopic arm gimmicks, and claw articulation. It could be mounted on Action Bases for display purposes.
