The RX-104 Odysseus Gundam was a prototype general purpose mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics for the Earth Federation Forces.

The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model and the “X” indicated that it was an experimental mobile suit. The “104” in the model code denoted that it was developed in UC 0104. It is part of Anaheim Electronics’ Zeta Project, as indicated by its connection to the RX-104FF Penelope.

History

Anaheim Electronics developed the RX-104 Odysseus Gundam for the Earth Federation Forces in UC 0105. The mobile suit was designed as the core unit for the RX-104FF Penelope, which used the Fixed Flight Unit system to achieve atmospheric flight capabilities.

The Odysseus Gundam was classified as a fifth-generation mobile suit alongside the RX-105 Ξ Gundam, which was developed around the same time. Both units represented the pinnacle of mobile suit technology in the early UC 0100s era.

In late April UC 0105, the Odysseus Gundam/Penelope was assigned to test pilot Lane Aim of the Circe Unit under the command of Kenneth Sleg, who was tasked with pursuing the anti-Federation military group Mafty.

Design

The Odysseus Gundam was said to be equipped with either a psycommu or quasi-psycommu system. This advanced system allowed for enhanced pilot interface and potentially remote weapon control capabilities.

The MS itself was similar to a second-generation MS, but it was capable of higher performance and was created with the intention of equipping the FF Unit. The mobile suit featured extendable shoulders and support legs that allowed it to dock with the Fixed Flight Unit to form the RX-104FF Penelope.

The Odysseus Gundam had a standard cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat. The mobile suit was powered by a Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor, output rated at 4,050 kW. With a head height of 26.0 metres, it was larger than most contemporary mass production mobile suits.

Armaments

In its undocked mode, the Odysseus Gundam was armed with a beam rifle and a pair of forearm-mounted composite weapon units that featured mega particle cannons, beam sabers and missiles.

Composite weapon unit

The Odysseus Gundam’s primary armament consisted of two composite weapon units mounted on the forearms. Each unit included a mega particle cannon, beam saber, and missiles, providing the mobile suit with versatile combat capabilities for both ranged and close-quarters combat.

The mega particle cannons provided powerful beam attacks capable of destroying enemy mobile suits with a single well-placed shot. The integrated beam sabers used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of a blade, allowing the weapon to cut through almost any material. The missile systems provided additional firepower for engaging multiple targets or area denial operations.

Beam rifle

The Odysseus Gundam could be equipped with an optional beam rifle for additional ranged combat capability. This weapon drew its power from energy packs and provided the pilot with a reliable backup weapon system when the composite weapon units required recharging or maintenance.

Behind the scenes

Hajime Katoki and Seiichi Nakatani were the original mechanical designers. The design was based on the RX-104 Odysseus Gundam from SD Gundam G Generation F.

The names Penelope, Odysseus and Argos come from the Greek writer Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey.
