RMS-106CS Hi-Zack Custom

The RMS-106CS Hi-Zack Custom was a custom long-range attack mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation Forces for sniping operations. It was an improved version of the RMS-106 Hi-Zack specialised for long-range combat.

The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model1 and the “MS” designated it as a mobile suit. The “106” in the model code denoted that it was developed from the RMS-106 Hi-Zack, and the “CS” suffix indicated it was a Custom Sniper variant.

History

The RMS-106CS Hi-Zack Custom was developed as an improved version of the RMS-106 Hi-Zack to address the need for long-range sniping capabilities during the Gryps Conflict. The Hi-Zack Custom featured a generator replacement with higher output manufactured by Anaheim Electronics to operate a high-powered sniper beam launcher.

Known pilots included Sorama, Kara, and Gilligan Justas. The mobile suit saw service with the Titans during the later stages of the Gryps Conflict, though its limited production numbers meant it remained relatively rare on the battlefield.

The Hi-Zack Custom’s design was later updated in the novel series Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, suggesting that some units may have remained in service beyond the end of the Gryps Conflict.

Design

The Hi-Zack Custom incorporated several significant improvements over the base Hi-Zack model. Its generator was replaced with one that had higher output manufactured by Anaheim Electronics to operate a high-powered sniper beam launcher. The power output was increased to 1,480 kW, providing sufficient energy to operate advanced beam weapons.

The mono-eye was also changed to a high-precision type, and the head’s heat dissipation mechanism was extended. These modifications enhanced the mobile suit’s targeting capabilities and allowed it to operate sophisticated optical systems for long-range engagements.

Other improvements included its armor being reinforced with Gundarium Alloy, thicker armor, internalization of some vulnerable power cables, and a new backpack as well as thrusters to improve mobility. The Gundarium alloy reinforcement provided better protection against beam weapons while maintaining reasonable weight.

The mobile suit retained the standard cockpit configuration of the Hi-Zack, with a panoramic monitor and linear seat located in the torso. Despite these modifications, the Hi-Zack Custom had overall height of 19.9 metres and head height of 18.0 metres.

Armaments

The Hi-Zack Custom’s standard weapons were a high-powered beam launcher for long-range attacks and a beam saber for close combat.

Beam launcher

The Hi-Zack Custom’s main weapon was a handheld beam weaponry that had high-output and long effective range, making it effective for sniper attacks. The beam launcher had a power rating of 2.1 MW and was powered by rechargeable energy cap. This specialised weapon allowed the Hi-Zack Custom to engage targets at extreme ranges with devastating effectiveness.

The beam launcher’s high power output came at the cost of increased energy consumption, requiring the upgraded generator to maintain sustained operations. The weapon was designed specifically for the Hi-Zack Custom and represented a significant advancement in portable beam weapon technology.

120 mm Zaku machine gun Kai

The Hi-Zack Custom could be equipped with the same shell-firing handheld armament as used by the original Hi-Zack. It was a recreation of the Zaku II’s machine gun to provide a cheaper, less energy-consuming weapon, and also featured an improved stock as well as better accuracy with a federation standard sensor.

This weapon provided the Hi-Zack Custom with a backup armament that did not drain the mobile suit’s power reserves, allowing for extended operations in the field. The improved accuracy made it suitable for medium-range engagements when the beam launcher was not appropriate.

Beam saber

The beam saber emitted high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field (via manipulation of electromagnetic fields), and then filled this I-field shell with superheated Minovsky particle plasma to produce an effective cutting blade. The Hi-Zack Custom was equipped with a beam saber stored on the rear skirt armor.

The beam saber served as the mobile suit’s primary melee weapon and emergency close-combat option. While the Hi-Zack Custom was optimised for long-range combat, the beam saber provided essential defensive capabilities when enemy units closed to melee range.

Missile pods

An optional pair of missile pods each containing three missiles could be mounted on the rear skirt’s beam saber holder. These provided additional firepower for area denial or anti-personnel operations, though mounting them prevented the use of the beam saber.

Behind the scenes

The RMS-106CS Hi-Zack Custom was designed as part of the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series. Despite its improvements, overall it had a modest performance boost over the original Hi-Zack.

The Hi-Zack Custom appears as a semi-hidden unit in Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam. It can be used if the player selects the Hi-Zack and chooses the Beam Launcher in the weapon select sub-menu.
