RGM-89A2 Jegan Type-A2 (GR)

The RGM-89A2 Jegan Type-A2 (GR) was an enhanced mass production mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics exclusively for the Earth Federation’s flagship General Revil.

The “R” in the model code meant it was a Federation model1 and the “GM” indicated that it was a Gundam mass production mobile suit. The “89” in the model code denoted that it was developed from the RGM-89 Jegan, the “A2” suffix indicated that it was the second A-type variant, and the “GR” designation meant it was specifically customised for the General Revil.

History

Anaheim Electronics developed the RGM-89A2 Jegan Type-A2 (GR) as an enhanced version of the standard RGM-89 Jegan for exclusive deployment aboard the Earth Federation’s flagship General Revil. The Type-A2 was designed with better overall performance and underwent significant renovation, particularly the enhancement of its propulsion system’s output and the addition of more thrusters on its legs and backpack, leading to better mobility.

The Type A2 had higher performance than the standard RGM-89 Jegan, including enhanced propulsion engines. All units deployed with the General Revil featured the same distinctive tan and orange colour scheme as other mobile suits assigned to the ship.

In UC 0096, during the Laplace Incident, the General Revil deployed a large mobile suit force to destroy both the Neo Zeon ship Garencieres and the Londo Bell ship Nahel Argama in an attempt to cover up the existence of the secret Laplace’s Box that threatened to upend the political order. The Jegan Type-A2 (GR) units served as the backbone of this force.

In UC 0097, Jegan Type-A2 (GR) units were among the mobile suits deployed to engage Zoltan Akkanen’s NZ-999 II Neo Zeong. Most of them were annihilated by the II Neo Zeong along with their mothership, though some managed to survived the attack. These surviving Jegan Type-A2 (GR) units later launched their own attack on the gaps of the II Neo Zeong’s I-Field, before they were hijacked by the II Neo Zeong and used by Zoltan against the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex.

Design

Anaheim Electronics designed the RGM-89A2 Jegan Type-A2 (GR) to provide enhanced performance over the standard Jegan whilst maintaining compatibility with existing equipment and tactics. The most significant improvements were the enhancement of its propulsion system’s output and the addition of more thrusters on its legs and backpack, leading to better mobility.

The mobile suit retained the standard titanium alloy ceramic composite armor of the base Jegan, providing adequate protection whilst keeping weight down. The Type-A2 had an ultracompact Minovsky power plant that generated an output of 1,980 kW, representing an improvement over the standard Jegan’s 1,870 kW output. Its enhanced propulsion system generated 65,800 kg of total thrust.

The mobile suit featured a standard cockpit in its torso with a panoramic monitor and linear seat. Its sensor suite provided a detection range of 16,300 metres, maintaining the baseline Jegan’s reconnaissance capabilities.

Armaments

The Type-A2 used the same weaponry as the original Jegan, but had a new shield with two 4-tube missile launchers built in and a vulcan pod system with added sensor unit.

Vulcan pod system

As with the original Jegan, the Jegan Type A2 could mount a vulcan pod system on the left side of its head as a close-range defensive armament. However, the Jegan Type A2’s vulcan pod system had an added sensor unit. The mounted vulcan gun had low firepower but a high rate of fire, making it extremely effective at restraining enemy machines.

The vulcan pod system fired 60 mm rounds at a rapid rate and, whilst having low individual shot power, proved highly effective for point defence against incoming missiles and for suppressing enemy mobile suits at close range.

Beam saber

Like the original Jegan, the Jegan Type A2 stored a beam saber in a rack on the right side of the waist, and its output could be adjusted as it had two beam emitters. Via selecting the output and emitter, this close combat weapon could emit a flat beam blade for slashing, or a slim beam blade with high penetration ability. The beam saber rack contained an accelerator equipped capacitor system for rapid recharge of the weapon.

The beam saber used an I-field to contain Minovsky particles within the shape of a blade. Minovsky particles broke down matter at a molecular level, allowing the beam saber to cut through almost any material.

Hand grenades

Inherited from the original Jegan, three hand grenades were stored in the grenade rack mounted on the left side of the waist. They could be thrown and timed to explode after several seconds as set by the pilot, or set to detonate when its sensors detected the metallic signal of extremely nearby enemy machines.

Beam rifle

The standard ranged armament of many mobile suits was the beam rifle. The Jegan Type A2 used the same beam rifle as the original Jegan. The rifle fired concentrated particle beams powered by rechargeable energy capacitors, providing the mobile suit with effective medium-range firepower.

Shield

A basic arm-mounted defence armament for many Federation mobile suits, it was used to protect against physical attacks and had anti-beam coating on its surface for defending against beam attacks. The Jegan Type A2 used an enlarged version of the original Jegan’s shield, and its built-in missile launchers were upgraded from a pair of twin missile launchers into two 4-tube missile launchers. The small missiles fired from these launchers had a short range as they only carried a small amount of propellant.

Behind the scenes

Katoki Hajime was the original mechanical designer for the Jegan Type-A2 (GR), as part of his work on the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series.

The distinctive tan and orange colour scheme was specifically designed to match the General Revil’s fleet colours, creating visual unity amongst the ship’s mobile suit complement.
