Biography
Life
Lenore Zala was a Coordinator who lived in the PLANTs with her husband Patrick Zala and their son Athrun. Her life was characterised by her role as a wife and mother, and she was part of the PLANT community that sought to build a new society for Coordinators in space.
Little is known about Lenore’s life before her death, but her role as Patrick’s wife and Athrun’s mother placed her at the centre of a family that would become deeply involved in the conflicts between Naturals and Coordinators. Her presence in the PLANTs during the early stages of the conflict between Earth and the PLANTs made her a victim of the escalating tensions.
Bloody Valentine
Lenore was killed during the “Bloody Valentine” incident, a nuclear attack launched by the Earth Alliance on the PLANT colony of Junius Seven on 14 February CE 70. The attack killed hundreds of thousands of Coordinators, including Lenore, and marked a turning point in the conflict between Earth and the PLANTs.
The attack violated treaties that prohibited the use of nuclear weapons, and it demonstrated the Earth Alliance’s willingness to commit atrocities against Coordinators. Lenore’s death, along with the deaths of hundreds of thousands of others, became a symbol of Natural aggression and Coordinator victimhood.
Impact
On Patrick Zala
Lenore’s death had a profound impact on Patrick, transforming him from a politician with hardline views into an extremist driven by hatred and a desire for revenge. Her death became a personal tragedy that deepened his anti-Natural stance and motivated his pursuit of genocidal policies against Naturals.
Patrick’s response to Lenore’s death was to pursue increasingly aggressive military actions and extremist policies. Her death became a justification for his hardline stance and his belief that coexistence between Coordinators and Naturals was impossible, ultimately leading to his plans for genocide.
On Athrun Zala
Lenore’s death also affected Athrun, who lost his mother at a young age. Whilst Athrun’s response to his mother’s death was different from his father’s, her absence and the circumstances of her death influenced his understanding of the conflict between Naturals and Coordinators.
Athrun’s relationship with his father became strained as Patrick’s extremist policies escalated, creating conflict between father and son. Lenore’s death served as a reminder of the human cost of the conflict and the importance of finding a path toward peace.
Legacy
