Catol
Colony construction mobile worker used by civilians at Moon Moon.
The Catol was a colony construction mobile worker built before the One Year War. It was later discovered and worshipped as a sacred object by the inhabitants of the Moon Moon colony.
The name “Catol” was also rendered as “Catl” in some sources. Despite being designated as a mobile worker, its power output was comparable to that of a combat mobile suit.
History
The Catol was a large work machine built before the One Year War and served as a progenitor to mobile suits. An unknown number of Catol units were produced and deployed in space for colony construction work. Throughout history, the world managed to forget the existence of a small old colony in the general area of Side 3, which became known as Moon Moon.
Over time, the people of Moon Moon abandoned technology and reverted to a more primitive state. They allowed forests to overgrow and built pyramids in the style of the ancient Aztecs and Mayans from Earth. The people of Moon Moon believed in the creed of the Light, which involved living in harmony with the moonlight to attain peace.
Though they abandoned the use of technology, the machines themselves still existed. One such machine was the giant mobile worker Catol, which was worshipped by the people as a god. In UC 0088, a battle broke out between the crews of the AEUG’s Argama and Neo Zeon’s Endra within the colony.
Mondo Agake and Rasara Moon reactivated the ancient Catol to demonstrate that it was only a machine, not a deity. Despite the Catol’s age, Mondo was able to destroy several of the Endra’s AMX-003 Gaza-C units on his own during the battle, proving the mobile worker’s combat effectiveness.
Design
The Catol featured a cylindrical body with a large monoeye sensor and four manipulator arms—two positioned above and two below its protruding shoulders. Unlike mobile suits, it had no legs and achieved movement through hovering. The mobile worker was designed primarily for construction work, but its power output was comparable to that of a combat mobile suit.
The Catol’s four-armed configuration made it well-suited for construction and industrial applications. The multiple manipulator arms allowed for complex operations and the ability to handle multiple tools or materials simultaneously. Despite its peaceful origins, the Catol proved capable of combat when the situation demanded it.
Armaments
The Catol’s armament was minimal, reflecting its original purpose as a construction vehicle.
Torch gun
Mounted on the lower right manipulator arm, the torch gun was primarily designed for welding and cutting operations during construction work. However, it could be used as a weapon when necessary, capable of damaging mobile suits at close range.

Behind the scenes
The Catol was designed as part of the Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ series to explore themes about the relationship between technology and spirituality. Its role as both a functional machine and an object of worship reflected the series’ examination of how societies might view advanced technology.
