Black Tri-Stars
The Black Tri-Stars (黒い三連星, Kuroi Sanrensei) were an elite Principality of Zeon mobile suit team active during the One Year War. Consisting of Miguel Gaia, Ortega, and Mash, the team gained fame for their distinctive black-painted mobile suits and their devastating signature formation attack known as the Jet Stream Attack.
Officially designated as the Mobile Assault Force 7th Division 1st Mobile Suit Battalion Command Affiliated Special Duties Squad, the team served under Major General Kycilia Zabi and became one of Zeon’s most feared mobile suit units. Their greatest achievement was the capture of Earth Federation General Johann Ibrahim Revil during the Battle of Loum, an act that briefly changed the course of the war before their eventual defeat by the RX-78-2 Gundam.
Formation and early service
The origins of the Black Tri-Stars traced back to May UC 0076, when Colonel Kycilia Zabi of the Republic of Zeon military formed the Mobile Training Battalion, an experimental unit created to establish mobile suit tactics in preparation for the upcoming war. At this time, Gaia, Ortega, and Mash were assigned to the Mobile Training Battalion D Company, 2nd Platoon, where they piloted MS-05B Zaku I units painted in dark sea blue.
Initially, the three pilots were not yet formed as a cohesive team but served in the same experimental unit that made them among Zeon’s earliest mobile suit pilots. The three men quickly became close friends through their shared experiences in developing mobile suit combat doctrine. Their early service involved extensive training exercises and combat manoeuvres that would later prove crucial in their development of revolutionary tactics.
During this period, the trio participated in mobile suit development programs under Dozle Zabi, serving as test pilots for new mobile suit designs and tactical formations. Their expertise in mobile suit combat and their natural teamwork made them valuable assets in the advancement of Zeon’s mobile weapon technology.
Battle of Loum
The team’s defining moment came during the Battle of Loum on 15-17 January UC 0079, the first major space battle of the One Year War. When the Principality of Zeon launched their assault on Side 5, the three pilots were ordered by Kycilia Zabi to assist Rear Admiral Dozle Zabi in the operation.
During this battle, the team first demonstrated their signature Jet Stream Attack while piloting MS-06C Zaku II units. The devastating effectiveness of their formation attack allowed them to sink five Earth Federation battleships, including the flagship Ananke. More significantly, the team was responsible for discovering and capturing the escape shuttle of General Johann Ibrahim Revil, the supreme commander of the Earth Federation Space Force.
The capture of General Revil was a tremendous propaganda victory for Zeon, demonstrating the superiority of their mobile suit forces and briefly shifting the balance of power in the early war. Due to their exceptional achievements at Loum, the team’s mobile suits were upgraded to MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type units. It was at this point that they adopted their trademark black, purple, and grey colour scheme that earned them the “Black Tri-Stars” designation.
Rise to prominence
Following the Battle of Loum, the Black Tri-Stars continued to serve with distinction, eventually switching to MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type units and achieving even greater battle results. Their reputation grew to the point where they became known as Major General Kycilia Zabi’s “ace in the hole,” and they were the only mobile suit team permitted to adopt the Mobile Assault Force emblem as their team symbol.
Together, the trio accumulated an impressive record, sinking a total of 14 battleships and cruisers throughout their service. Their combat effectiveness was said to equal that of an entire squad of normal soldiers, and their ruthless precision made them a feared name among Federation forces. The team’s success was built on their exceptional individual piloting skills combined with perfect coordination and their innovative tactical formations.
Tactical innovations
Jet Stream Attack
The Black Tri-Stars’ most famous contribution to mobile suit warfare was the development of the Jet Stream Attack, a formation attack that became their signature manoeuvre. This tactic involved the three mobile suits approaching their target in a tight line formation, creating the illusion that only a single mobile suit was approaching.
The attack began with the lead unit (typically Gaia) attacking the target with either ranged or melee weapons. When the target attempted to evade or counterattack, the two follow-up units would launch their assault. The brilliance of this formation lay in how evading the initial attack typically left the opponent perfectly positioned for the subsequent strikes. The danger of this manoeuvre was that successfully dodging one attack usually put the victim directly in the sights of the second or third attack.
When the team later switched to MS-09 Dom units, Gaia would often begin the attack with the scattering beam cannon to blind the opponent before the main assault. This tactical innovation made the Jet Stream Attack extremely difficult to counter and established it as one of the most feared combat manoeuvres of the war.
Earth operations
In October UC 0079, the Black Tri-Stars received new MS-09 Dom mobile suits and were transferred to Earth by Kycilia Zabi, where they joined the 7th Terrestrial Mobile Division, 1st Mobile Suit Battalion. Their mission was to bolster the defences of the mining facilities at Odessa against the Federation’s anticipated all-out attack and to hunt down the Federation prototype ship White Base.
On 6 November UC 0079, the team arrived at Odessa and immediately set out to ambush the White Base. Their assault on the Federation vessel marked the first time their feared reputation would be tested against the legendary Gundam. The engagement took place in darkness, with the team’s black-painted Doms providing excellent camouflage as they stalked their prey.
During this battle, the Black Tri-Stars managed to achieve a significant victory by destroying the Medea transport commanded by Ensign Matilda Ajan, dealing a severe blow to Federation morale. However, their encounter with Amuro Ray in the Gundam would prove to be the beginning of their downfall.
Downfall and defeat
The Black Tri-Stars’ previously impenetrable formation was finally broken when they faced the Gundam pilot Amuro Ray. During their assault on the White Base, Amuro discovered the weakness inherent in the Jet Stream Attack—the rear units were left exposed when committing to their formation. In a move that shocked the veteran pilots, Amuro used Gaia’s Dom as a stepping platform, allowing him to strike and kill Mash before the pilot could draw his weapon.
The death of Mash devastated the remaining two members, as their formation had never been broken before. Gaia, as the team leader, felt particularly responsible for his subordinate’s death and was filled with regret over their loss to what they perceived as an amateur pilot. The psychological impact of losing their comrade and the breaking of their “impenetrable” formation severely affected their combat effectiveness.
Determined to honour and avenge Mash’s death, Gaia and Ortega returned to Odessa and planned their final assault on the Gundam and White Base. On 9 November UC 0079, during Operation Odessa, the remaining two Black Tri-Stars launched their revenge attack. However, with their trio broken and their psychological advantage shattered, they proved no match for Amuro’s rapidly developing Newtype abilities. Both Gaia and Ortega were killed by the Gundam, bringing an end to the legend of the Black Tri-Stars.

Mobile suits
Throughout their service, the Black Tri-Stars piloted several different mobile suit types, each marking a different phase of their career:
MS-05B Zaku I
The team’s earliest mobile suits were MS-05B Zaku I units painted in dark sea blue during their time in the Mobile Training Battalion. These were among the first production mobile suits and served as the foundation for their tactical development.
MS-06C Zaku II
During the Battle of Loum, the team piloted MS-06C Zaku II units, with which they first demonstrated the Jet Stream Attack and achieved their greatest victory.
MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type
Following their success at Loum, the team was upgraded to MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type units and adopted their distinctive black, purple, and grey colour scheme.
MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type
The team later switched to MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type units, achieving even greater battle results with their improved performance characteristics.
MS-09 Dom
For their final Earth operations, the Black Tri-Stars received MS-09 Dom units specially painted in their signature colours. These powerful ground-combat mobile suits were perfectly suited to their Jet Stream Attack formation.
Legacy and influence
The Black Tri-Stars left an enduring impact on mobile suit warfare and popular culture that extended far beyond their operational service. Their innovative Jet Stream Attack became a template for coordinated formation attacks that influenced mobile suit tactics throughout the Universal Century. The psychological warfare aspect of their reputation also demonstrated the importance of ace pilots in maintaining troop morale.
The team’s influence extended into subsequent conflicts, with later pilots and units attempting to recreate their success. The Tri-Stars Team of Londo Bell during UC 0096 explicitly modelled themselves after the Black Tri-Stars, adopting similar tactics and even painting their RGM-96X Jesta units in dark colours as a tribute.
Beyond the Universal Century, the Black Tri-Stars established a template that appeared in various forms throughout the Gundam multiverse. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny featured a trio of ZAFT pilots operating ZGMF-XX09T DOM Trooper units who performed their own version of the Jet Stream Attack. Mobile Suit Gundam AGE included the Phantom 3, a trio of Vagan pilots with their “Delta Attack” formation.
Behind the scenes
The Black Tri-Stars were created by director Tomino Yoshiyuki and designed by Okawara Kunio for the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. Their distinctive appearance and memorable tactics made them one of the most iconic antagonist teams in the franchise.
The team’s voice actors in the original Japanese version were Issei Masamune as Gaia, Issei Futamata as Ortega, and Ichirō Nagai as Mash. Notably, Mash had only one speaking line in the original series—“Yes sir!”—but his minimal dialogue added to the character’s mysterious nature.
The concept of three coordinated pilots became so popular that it established a recurring pattern in subsequent Gundam series, with many featuring their own trio of elite pilots as antagonists. This template influenced everything from the Biological CPUs in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED to Team Trinity in Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
