The RGZ-91B Re-Gz Custom was a prototype transformable mobile suit developed by Anaheim Electronics as an improved version of the RGZ-91 Re-Gz. Unlike the original Re-Gz, which required an external Back Weapon System (BWS) for transformation, the Re-Gz Custom achieved full transformation capability reminiscent of its predecessor, the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam.

The model number “RGZ-91B” follows the Federation designation system: “R” indicates Federation (Renpou), “GZ” denotes it as a Gundam Zeta mass-production type, “91” shows its development lineage from the RGZ-91 Re-Gz, and “B” signifies it as an improved or second variant.

History

The RGZ-91B Re-Gz Custom was an improved version of the prototype RGZ-91 Re-Gz used by Londo Bell during the Second Neo Zeon War in UC 0093. The Re-Gz Custom represented Anaheim Electronics’ attempt to address the limitations of the original Re-Gz design whilst incorporating lessons learned from previous transformable mobile suit programmes.

It was believed that the Re-Gz Custom was designed specifically for Londo Bell ace Amuro Ray, who had been piloting the original Re-Gz before switching to the RX-93 ν Gundam. The Custom represented a bridge between the Re-Gz and ν Gundam development programmes, incorporating advanced technologies that would later be refined in subsequent mobile suits.

The development of the Re-Gz Custom coincided with the escalating tensions that would lead to the Second Neo Zeon War. Londo Bell’s requirement for high-performance mobile suits capable of matching Neo Zeon’s advanced units drove the rapid development of enhanced variants like the Re-Gz Custom.

With the completion of the RX-93 ν Gundam, the Re-Gz Custom project was shelved, as the newer Gundam represented a more advanced solution to Londo Bell’s requirements. However, the technologies developed for the Re-Gz Custom contributed to subsequent transformable mobile suit designs.

Design

Whereas the original Re-Gz transformed into waverider mode through the use of the attachable Back Weapon System (BWS), the Re-Gz Custom was capable of full transformation like its predecessor, the AEUG’s MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam. The Re-Gz Custom integrated the BWS into the mobile suit’s main body, eliminating the need for external equipment whilst maintaining the enhanced firepower and mobility benefits.

The Re-Gz Custom featured more powerful weapons and design elements similar to the original MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam. The head design resembled the Zeta Gundam’s head, and the suit incorporated wing binders similar to those found on the original Zeta. These design choices were intentional, as the unit was developed specifically for Amuro Ray’s use, and the addition of a more traditional Gundam-type head reflected this intended purpose.

Additional apogee motors improved the suit’s mobility in both mobile suit and waverider modes. The Re-Gz Custom possessed 28 apogee motors distributed throughout its frame, significantly more than most contemporary mobile suits. This enhanced manoeuvring capability made the unit exceptionally agile in space combat scenarios.

The Re-Gz Custom utilised Gundarium alloy construction, providing superior protection compared to the standard titanium alloy ceramic composite used in mass-production units. The enhanced power output of 2,550 kW supported both the suit’s transformation systems and its more powerful armament array.

Armaments

The Re-Gz Custom’s armaments represented a significant upgrade over the original Re-Gz, featuring more powerful weapons and improved versatility in combat.

Vulcan guns

The Re-Gz Custom mounted two vulcan guns in its head, providing close-range defensive capability. These shell-firing weapons featured a high rate of fire but relatively low power compared to beam weapons. Although they could not damage the thick armor of enemy mobile suits, they proved effective against lightly armored targets such as sensors, missiles, and small spacecraft.

The vulcan guns served multiple tactical roles beyond direct combat. They could be used to clear debris, destroy incoming missiles, or suppress enemy positions during combat manoeuvres. Their rapid-fire capability made them particularly valuable for point defence and area denial operations.

Hyper beam sabers

Rather than conventional beam sabers, the Re-Gz Custom was equipped with two hyper beam sabers that could function as beam launchers. These weapons were stored in recharge racks in the backpack and were hand-carried when deployed. The dual functionality provided exceptional versatility, allowing the pilot to engage targets at both close and medium ranges.

The hyper beam sabers represented an evolution of beam saber technology, offering higher output and improved beam stability compared to standard weapons. When configured as beam launchers, they could engage targets at ranges where conventional beam sabers would be ineffective, providing the Re-Gz Custom with additional tactical options.

Missile launchers

Two 3-tube missile launchers mounted on the backpack provided the Re-Gz Custom with substantial long-range firepower. These launchers could engage multiple targets simultaneously or concentrate their firepower against heavily armored opponents. The missiles could be fitted with various warhead types depending on mission requirements.

The backpack-mounted configuration protected the missile systems from enemy fire whilst ensuring they remained accessible for reloading operations. The launchers’ position also allowed them to be used effectively in both mobile suit and waverider modes, maintaining the unit’s combat capability regardless of configuration.

Beam assault rifle

The Re-Gz Custom’s primary ranged weapon was a beam assault rifle that resembled the Kalashnikov series of automatic rifles. This weapon provided the mobile suit with reliable medium-range firepower and could be used effectively in both mobile suit and waverider configurations.

The beam assault rifle’s design emphasised reliability and ease of use, making it an ideal weapon for Amuro Ray’s piloting style. The rifle’s compact design and efficient energy consumption allowed for extended combat operations without requiring frequent reloading or recharging.

Behind the scenes

Akitaka Mika was the original mechanical designer for the RGZ-91B Re-Gz Custom. Akitaka is primarily known for his work as a mechanical designer for Sunrise, where he was involved in beloved projects such as Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.

The Re-Gz Custom was developed as part of the Char’s Counterattack Mobile Suit Variations design series, which expanded the mobile suit roster beyond what appeared in the original film. This design series allowed for exploration of alternative development paths and “what if” scenarios within the established Universal Century timeline.

Akitaka’s design deliberately incorporated visual elements from the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam to emphasise the Re-Gz Custom’s lineage and its intended role as Amuro Ray’s personal unit. The traditional Gundam-type head design was specifically chosen to reflect the suit’s intended pilot.
